You could ask 100 Central Floridians that same question and get 100 completely different responses. Here's a few highlights from my perspective:
Leesburg - too difficult to commute to Orlando for work. Up the road are "The Villages" - retirement mecca. Old Leesburg is about the same as it was 30 years ago - got passed up in all of the activity around The Villages and the Mt. Dora area. There are some unattractive areas in Leesburg that I wouldn't want to live near. Also, some quaint old neighborhoods. Altamonte Springs - Middle Class residential area about 10 miles north of Downtown Orlando. Heavy commercial - big mall; many strip malls; 436 is very traffic heavy. Many 3/2 homes built in the 1970's. Some Poulty type neighborhoods built in the '90's. Orlando - The heart of Central Florida. Basically two large economic regions - Downtown and the Tourist District to the south. Public schools are not that great. There are some very nice older neighborhoods in and around Orlando. The only substantial new neighborhood is Baldwin Park. Baldwin Park has its own downtown and economic center - also near some pretty rough older neighborhoods along Old Cheney. Also has a very active municipal airport. Kissimmee - former cattle town turned into middle class house farms. Cheaper touristy areas along Irlo Bronson Highway. Nice downtown. Home to Disney's Celebration. Quote:
Old Winter Park on the south side of Lake Maitland Isleworth Windermere Alaqua Magnolia Plantation (or one of the nicer subdivisions off of Markam Woods Rd) Mt. Dora or Howey in the Hills on one of the lakes. |

Altamonte Springs - tooooooo busy Kissimmee - ? Orlando - Growth out of control - but I'd prefer the east side If money was no object: Around Lake Pickett with acreage (it's more in the country with breathing space)-- or an older large home with big trees in Belle Isle on Lake Conway (nice area, refined, but somehow not at snooty as some of the newer upscale developments) |

Prichard, thanks for the suggestions on good residential areas. We're heading down in several weeks and will check them out.
