I was told by a Realtor that the developer chose to fancy up Avalon so much because he knew if he just built a regular subdivision nobody would buy because of the power plant. People seem to not mind risking their health to live in a Celebration look-a-like.

Is that upwind, or downwind? Are you aware that facility is also converting from bunker oil to natural gas?

Personally, people who are worried about their health should be more worried about what cars will do to Orlando's air quality. There have been a few times where I have found car exhaust to leave me a bit wheezey, and I don't have asthma.

dotnetdotcom is on a distinguished road
The "smoke" that can be seen coming out of the top of the cooling towers at the power plant near avalon park is not smoke, and has no adverse health effects. It is basically steam, actually, more like a cloud produced by the condensation of the recently evaporated water. The plant uses water to cool things (many things), this water is cooled with the use of natural draft cooling towers (which uses changing air densities to produce airflow, instead of a fan). Evaporative cooling is used to cool the coolant, creating warm moist air which is less dense than the surrounding cooler drier air, which makes it rise/float out of the top of the tower. When the warm moist air contacts the cooler surrounding air (cooler air can hold less moister) the water condenses and forms what looks to be smoke, or a cloud.
Several of you mentioned that it reminded you of the simpsons, where the nuclear plant has similar cooling towers. Did it ever dawn on you that if a nuclear plant has these towers then it could not possibly be smoke. Nuclear power plants don't create smoke. They create toxic waste, but not smoke.
MY POINT: enough about the health effects of these towers.
However, this is a gas fueled power plant and therefore has exhaust. The emission requirements for power plants in the US are very stringent and therefore this should not be a worry. Also, they are an eyesore, and any power plant reduces the value of the property around it. This my lead to really cheap housing, which is inevitably followed by low income people (ie poorfolk, ie ghetto people, ie crime).
If you read my entire post you must be about as bored as I was when I decided to write it.
