Thumbs down Orlando has turned into something awful.

My husband grew up in Orlando (almost 14 years) and he said it truly WAS paradise before, even though it felt a bit too hot here. Now he says this place is awful, he dreads every day here in Orlando and wants out ASAP, he complains a lot about not being able to move now.

In the last 5 or 6 years, it has become a nightmare. It is crime, traffic, poverty, overcrowding, no green areas, too built up, homelessness, and high cost of living. The crime is #1 problem to be, it's terrible. Then it gets depressing to see tractors taking down every single small wooded area you see to build apts or condos.

It is even hard to find a place to RENT these days (talking about this today during lunch), even if you can afford to shill out the $1,500/mo for somewhere to live and deal with noisy neighbors.

It is a hassle to live here, I honestly cannot see why anyone would KNOWINGLY move down here with all these problems. Seems masochistic to me.

some of the naysayers pretty much just make those with the also real positives not want to bother being part of this forum. can't speak for all but i've heard from some. When those who post positively do so they are slammed with comments to somehow attempt to discredit their views. there are those who hate and those who love it. many of those who love it are more busy enjoying themselves then spending countless hours on here.

Notice the names of the posters...it the same ones who say the same things on every post. I like living in Orlando, but am growing weary of being challenged every time I say I do. The attitude is how could anyone in their right mind actually LIKE living here. So, I have slowed down ALOT in my posting and will continue to do so unless I feel I can really help someone.

You are helping me! I've come to recognize the naysayers and have even begun to tell them to "shut-up!" But I really do appreciate all your posts and all the others who are truly helpful, so please don't stop! By the way, do you know of any telephone companies that are hiring for linemen in the Orlando area and surrounding cities?

Thanks...have you checked with Bell South? My father in law retired in 1988 after 37 years working with them in Orlando. He and his partner installed many of the systems in the buildings downtown. But he started out as a lineman working the poles in Bay Hill and Windermere when they were nothing more than swamps.

They have decent pay and great benefits. My father in law passed away in 1992 but my mother in law still gets a pension from them every month.

Also, we had Sprint when we were in Winter Park, you may want to check with them.

I did a search and it looks like the only $1500 a month rent in Orlando are the 3 bedroom places. I think you could easily find a 1bdr for $700-800 a month. Either that, or every listing on apartments.com and rent.com is a ghetto place.

You can help me! We're still in the early stages of planning a possible relocation. Husband is in the middle of applying for some openings at Valencia and Seminole Comm. College. After tons of research the last couple of weeks, we've really narrowed things down to the Avalon Park area (for now). When/if he gets called for an interview we'll make the drive to really do some hands-on research but what am I missing? It seems great. We love the community atmosphere with everything close by - schools (we'll have a middle schooler), shopping, etc. We like that UCF is also sort of close by. We like that the Waterford Lakes shopping is also within a few miles. Even Winter Park with its Whole Foods seems at least on the same side of town. I realize my husband would have a longer commute but the most important thing for us is quality of life. What am I missing? I know the houses are close together but it looks like from Google there are sidewalks all over Avalon Park. We don't have sidewalks here and with a special needs eleven year old it drives me crazy. So what gives?

I think we have the link for the website for Bell South and Sprint but I'll make sure to get apps out to them. Thanks!
