I see what you are saying and yes crime can happen anywhere but I look at the facts. A place like Oil city has a crime index of 160. Even Port Saint Lucie with its 400 index is far safer than Orlando's 1000 index. My odds of being a victim is much lower in a safer city. I would know, I have friends that were victims of crime and my moms car got broken into. Thats in West Palm Beach with a crime index of 900.

Just days after 21 people were charged with drug trafficking in the Oil City area, the city's police chief said the drug problem here is no worse than anywhere else. Moderator cut: Provide a link instead of copying everything here, please Last edited by markablue; 12-07-2007 at 12:34 PM.. |

I realize that I am not yet a full time resident so I haven't experienced the day-in and day-out happenings of the area over an extended amount of time. That being said, I spend about a week a month at my home in Mount Dora, going to Orlando every day during my stay and I have not yet once felt as if my life were in danger or I was going to be robbed or whatever.
Working in NYC, I'd say I run into situations about once a week where I get an uncomfortable sense of uneasiness, although nothing has happened. All I'm saying is wake up crime is everywhere. If you let it consume you, it will take over your life making you paranoid and molding your life around your fear. Today's crime stems from the ever increasing degree of violence in movies, tv and video games, the shock 'n awe all over CNN, You Tube, etc. We used to be horrified at things we brush off easily today. We have been so stimulated by the media that like a drug addict, we are constantly looking for more. Don't tell me that sensation doesn't translate into more crime, and don't tell me that doesn't happen everywhere in our country. |

There is crime in Oil city, the index is 160. The crime in Orlando is 1000 so the crime is much worse with plenty of murders. No murders in Oil city. The drug problem is not my problem as I dont do drugs and I will not get involved, thats where most of the problems are. I am 5 times safer in a low crime area.

The crime index is a percentage and not based on the number of people. If you look at city-data they tell you the chance(per 10,000) of being a victim of said crime. Compare Orlando and Oil city and get back to me

I know how it works. and being a percentage of a number will tell you that a 160 is a larger percent based on a population of 12000 than that of an index of say 138 in a population of 40,000. I know its not actual people. do the math and use stats as they are supposed to be used. the 138 is an actual figure for an orlando suburb. spend time and do simple ratio and porportion calculations based on the numbers provided and think about what you are saying. you are getting into areas you are not ready for. and, you not liking the information that i have provided to you for your welfare is not to be mistaken as an invitaion to be a smart as_s. half of my job is calculation and statistics. |

Ok lets break it down.
Oil city: Murders per 100,000 = 0 Robberies per 100,000 = 26 Auto thefts per 100,000 = 165 Orlando: Murders per 100,000 = 17 Robberies per 100,000 = 517 Auto thefts per 100,000 = 1064 You can not argue that there has never been a murder in Oil city while there has been 17 in Orlando just that year alone. Your chances of having your car stolen is more than 1% per year in Orlando. |

Uh, just cause YOU'RE not involved with drugs doesn't make you safe. People on drugs tend to do the crime...
