you see the oil city stats. oil city is about 12k people. winter springs murder per 100000=0 robberies/100000=12.6 auto theft/100000=88 population about 32k and it is an orlano burb. neighboring cities to w.s. are similar. what i am trying to point out is when people tell their stories about orlando they tend to include the entire metro area. some include the entire state. as you can see by your own method of comparison there are safe metro orlando towns . you see how things are here, people are petrified or made to be petrified to get anywhere near orlando. when many orlando burbs, which those interested in orlando are also interested in, can be safe like oil city. this is if you go by the stats. the crime trickle doesnt generally leave the areas it festers in. as far as stats and orlano goes,,,if there were say 100 murders all in say 1 general neighborhood, it will show as a stat for the entire city. and this is actually kind of the case there. if you lived in oil city and there was 1 street in the city and they were bad element and there was 1 murder there on that street, it would show as a stat for the entire city. if there were 50 auto thefts on that street,,,,,the whole city would be included in the stat. I believe this is why many people try to point out that there are certain areas within the city where these things are known to happen and that the stats surely do not represent the entire city, although it appears that way. stats need to be mixed with ratio calcs and logistics. if some animal went into a magic game and he was from some other state, and he shot everyone at the game there would be 30000 murders from someone who doesnt even live in orlando. the stats would show all these orlando murders. i know its long winded but this is how i see the whole stats thing... |

I agree. But remember suburbs are a seperate city with its own name. Winter springs may be as safe as Oil city but if you go into Orlando your risking yourself. Sure you can stay in winter springs and never venture into Orlando. There is no bad cities anywhere near Oil city. Pittsburgh is about 75 miles south of Oil city and ill very rarely go there, only to shop all day(big sale), see a carnival, concert or something.

Maybe it is time for good people to simply start fighting back. Wait, forget I said that, you might go to jail or get sued. We prosecute our police officers for doing their jobs. Silly me. We will have to go inside our gated guarded communities until they tax us out of them. I wish we could move to Florida, sigh.

Statistically crime is getting out of hand around here, but at least up in Seminole I see no evidence of a sudden and violent shift in crime....
In other words it didn't just become a war zone around here or anything. I still feel about as safe as I did 12 years ago when I move up this way. That being said, it doesn't mean I'd get off I-4 at OBT and park my car and walk around, but again, that was the case 12 years ago... I think there are certain areas that crime HAS gotten out of control, and random, weird acts of violence are occurring a little more frequently than they used to, but it just isn't a situation where anyone I know of is living in fear for thier life or anything... |

I always thought a suburb was just a smaller part of the city with the same name. not a differently-named place.

I grew up in the Central Florida area, and I too and appalled by what's happening here. I love this place because it's what I'm familiar with, but it's in the top 25 most dangerous cities when you count the number of people and the number of crimes. No, not every area is bad, but everyone I know is talking about how much things have changed in the past 15 years. Seminole county is definitely a safer place for our family to be, but my husband thinks it's just a matter of time before the rifraf makes it's way here. I'm hoping it gets cleaned up before that happens.

I hope so too but its best not to relocate there if the area is gonna go downhill. WPB is the 14th most dangerous city. I wished my parents took it seriously and relocated with me. When I leave WPB(and probably FL alltogether) I will pray for my parents that nothing bad happens ![]() |

I've only lived in Orlando for 2 years now and you do hear about all the crime. No one likes it, and everyone is talking about it. Everyone needs to understand that there are almost 2 million people who live in the greater Orlando area, you can't go by the satistics of the population given for the town of Orlando. That is a small fraction of this area. I live 15 miles from downtown Orlando in Orange county and my mailing address is Orlando. I know the rise in crime is bad in this area but consider more reasonable statistics. Also, consider the millions of "tourists" that are here every year that add to the numbers.
From Wikipedia: The Orlando Area has a population of 1,933,215 according to the U.S. Census Bureau 2005 population estimates. The size of the city of Orlando is very unusual for a metropolitan area of its size since most of the inhabitants of the area live in the suburbs and surrounding areas in Orange and Seminole counties, whereas the total population of the city proper is only 213,223 people (2005 estimate). |
