Yeah, the commute isn't too bad at all. I work near UCF and live at the furthest exit East on I4, and it takes me about 35 minutes to get from one to another, and that is with a little bit of traffic.

Default Debary and Orange City are nicer...

Deltona was built as a retirement community and the traffic problems are immense now, since there are no through streets. Businesses are in pockets of residential areas. The high schools have uniformed patrolmen in them. Gangs are a big problem. The mayor of Deltona is proud of the diversity of the population in Deltona -- it could be an asset if all the different cultures would mix and blend, but, sad to say, we witness much animosity among the different groups. Debary is a nicer community (zip code 32713) and Orange City has retained much of it's small town atmosphere (zip code 32763). Some of the numbered streets in Orange City are not paved -- special assessments are going to be levied against them for paving.
Deland (zip code 32720) to the north has Stetson University and a quaint downtown. Before you buy, check with Volusia County Growth & Development office concerning proposed new subdivisions, road widening projects, and new apartment complexes. The area is growing rapidly. What may be a quiet, or even rural area today is likely going to be stripped of all it's vegetation and built upon.

Unhappy Moving to Deltona

Boy, are all of you making me nervous. I am being transferred from Baltimore to Maitland and have been researching many houses and areas. While, I was leaning more towards Deltona, I am now getting very nervous about it. Is it honestly as bad as all of you are saying.

I don't think it is that bad at all! But then again, I just moved here today. You should check out the "Arbor Ridge" sub-development in Deltona. It is right next to I-4 and is all newly developed homes. Apart from the same rural feeling (at least compared to Orlando), it doesn't even seem like the rest of Deltona.

Go to the online version of the Daytona Beach News Journal and do a search. They did a series about the high school there - Pine Ridge - a couple of years back. It seems the issue is very divergent groups of people who don't mix.

Any information would be helpful.

Also any ideas of affordable single family housing in the Orlando area, with good schools and neighborhoods?

Thanks!
I live in Deltona for almost 6 years, and cannot wait for the day to move out of here..... (probably next year)!!!

1. Crime I think is tvery high, has gotten around 100% higher than it was 6 years ago.
2. Schools-drug dealers on every step you make even in Elementary Schools.
3. Boring small city with no any entertaiment for young people!!!
4. Hurricanes, 2 years ago we Lost our house - COMPLETELY!!
5. Work market is so low, no jobs, the highest pay is around $9.00/hr (If you get) even in Deland, Orange City etc.
6. Volusia County is one of the poorest counties in Florida.
7. Gaasoline prices always higher around 2 (special tax for Volusia County).
8. Property Taxes are getting higher every year, but no paychecks!!!!
if is something else I will add later. I don't like Deltona. I love Heathrow, Lake Mary much better and only 15-20 miles from West of Deltona.

Thanks so much. I'll check it out. Do you mind telling me if you are in the south or north end of Deltona. Did you have a problem getting home owner's insurance like people are saying? I really like the area but am so worried about making a bad decision.

I grew-up in Deltona .. nice suburb traffic is not bad.. very limited on shopping and things to do .. the city demographics are about half caucasion and half hispanic.. The schools are o.k. but over the last few years there has been an increase in gang activity.. depends on your price range but if you can afford it casselberry or longwood might be better

It is at the northern most end of Deltona (last exit on I-4). I had 0 issues getting insured through Royal Palm (and I had a few others as options as well).

For me, it is great so far, as I don't mind the commute to work (around 35 minutes) in Orlando and I allowed me to get much more for my money compared to areas closer to Orlando.

Don't believe everything you read here. All it takes is one person with a gripe to make an entire town look bad. I've lived here for 19+ years. I've sent my children to school here (public). No problems. (Yes, I even have one in high school). Deltona isn't the same as some who may have grown up here years ago. Two miles from my house there's plenty of shopping. Meanwhile, I don't have all the crime & noise & traffic associated with all those shopping centers. (That's Orange City's problem). As for DeBary, I guess if you like living next door to the stepford wives, then it's for you. Xbox murders? In the 40 years Deltona's been around, that's the only one they could come up with? I wonder how many other towns have just ONE?

Bottom line, do your OWN research. Don't rely on disgruntled former residents & real estate agents to give you the truth. You can look up crime stats, school stats, populations stats (with median income information) all on line.

HTH! I love it here.
