Its just really beginning that here now. It has been nice an temperate so far , interjected with a couple bitter cold days (in the 20's), and I must say, unseasonably so....like your couple days in the 30' that y'all had so far.
I lived in Pittsburgh for twelve years. I attended college/graduate school and then worked for some time during the years 1987-1999. It is a really nice city and will always have a special place in my heart. Now that I have a family, it would be a great city to continue raising our kids. We visit every year as my husband is from there and his parents still reside in the suburbs. My children are big Penguins fans and we really love going to sporting events there. Love, love Pittsburgh! However, I just could not live there because of the winters. Indeed, for about 7-8 months it is just too gloomy and cold for me now that I am older

We both hate it here and we're ready for a change.

What we are looking for:

A place that either up north or out west.
Nice snowy winters with warm/mild summers.
A large, lively city close by with quite small towns around it.
LOW LOW LOW crime rate
Decent job market
Decent price of living
We LOVE outdoor activities
Mountains would also be a plus

Places we DONT want:

Texas
Georgia
Alabama
Vermont
New Jersey
Illinois
New York
Florida (Obivously but just incase)
Arizona

Let me know what places you think would work best with our list!
That sounds like where we just moved from MINNESOTA!!!! Good luck!

Wow, omg no, we raised 2 children in South Florida, and after they grew up and left the nest, we wanted a change as well, so I got a transfer with AT&T to Raleigh, NC. The first couple of years were nice, different, the season changes, etc. ( by the way, we are NYC born & raised).
For me each passing year here gets worse & worse as far as disliking the cold temps. Everything comes to a halt when snow, ice, is forecasted, a dusting of snow closes the place down due to lack of equipment. I totaled my truck couple yrs ago, on an ice patch on a bridge. So waaaaah waaaah, I don't blame anyone but myself for not researching better, don'tget me wrong its pretty here, but reminds me in a way what it was like when we moved to Broward county in the late 70's. It's growing, but still not a big city IMO, guess its what you are looking for. I can go on and on, just be careful for what you wish for.... We are in the process of selling our house to return to the Sunshine state ! I will take the heat & humidity any day over freezing temps ! Check out where ever you decide to move as long as you can b4 making a choice and good luck !

I've heard some people describe Florida as being freezing. I'd love the weather that Raleigh gets.

Freezing in FL? Man where in the heck is someone from if theyre freezing in FL?

Anyhow, I agree, I like Raleigh weather too- 4 mild seasons.

People move from freezing temps to the hottest temps. Why? Makes no sense, it's like trading in one thing you hate for another thing you will (eventually) hate. Why not get 4 mild seasons and get the best of both? Oh well.

It might be that one person's mild is another person's cold. For me, anything below 70 is cold, and I feel rather unpleasant dealing with it. I also hate things like shoveling snow, scraping ice, raking leaves, and so on, so the idea of four radically different seasons doesn't appeal to me. (The only good season to me is summer -- less trees covered in flowers, no leaves, no ice/snow. I don't see the attraction of living in a place where half the year everything is either dead or dying, but some people seem enamored with how "pretty" dead things are. That's probably why zombie TV shows are popular, too...)

To me, that is an interesting thing as well, as other posters have said, it's all individual preferences. The one thing I hate, hate, hate, did I repeat HATE about hot weather, as a running/biking/hiking enthusiast, is that it causes me to get tired faster. For me, I'd even take 20* weather over an 85* high, especially when that is elevated even a few degrees more by humidity. So, to be honest with you, I'd think that while 87*, 90* and 89* may not be as bad as Florida due to lack of humidity, it may still be too hot for me. I like the idea of Asheville, and it having cooler mornings and even during the day only going into the low 80s in the summer months. The winter months of Raleigh don't seem terrible, though I do enjoy the Florida winters where it is in the 50s in the morning and 70s during the day, that is why January is probably my favorite month down here. I'm sick and tired of the heat, and definitely plan to move eventually, even though there are other nice things about Florida. My ideal temperature range is anywhere between about 45* to 75*, because what I've found is that even when it does get cooler, I can, you know, put on a sweatshirt/sweatpants on a 50 degree day and artificially inflate the temperature at least 10 degrees, especially if I'm moving. I've found that there really is more I can do about a cold day than a warm day (I don't have any coping strategies here). Many people though simply aren't willing to prepare or dress to the temperature it is outside. Frankly I prefer the style of being able to wear jeans/a sweater/jacket, and in Florida you can only really do that for maybe two months without stepping outside and sweating.

As far as the pictures show below, I think it's not necessarily an appreciation or attraction for things being dead, but an appreciation for natural rhythms of life, and the different things that live during those different seasons (like so) : )
