Heathrow is great, but check out the high school for that area. I had the opportunity to buy there and I took the time to hunt the entire area down. The high school is a turn off. Your children won't be going to Lake Mary high though. Do your homework in advance if you have school age children.

Heathrow is fantastic but pricey.I would like to recommend Altamonte Springs or Longwood but there are just too many bad areas that overlap with the good. Most of Maitland and Winter Park are nice but you absolutley must check the school first because I know as with my kids, you can live in a great neighborhood but be forced into a crummy school.
Areas to skip:Sanford,Eatonville,Fern Park(where I grew up)Casselberry.Winter Springs(except Tuskawilla areas)Good Luck!

How about in Sarasota? What's it like during hurricane season?

Have you checked Bradenton?Much closer to Tampa and Sarasota .
Its pretty nice.....Anna Maria island across the bridge, houses are in total different price range than Sarasota.
Hurricane season, nothing to worry about. It usually rains at least once a day for a few minutes then here comes the sun. It took me one season to get use to it,the weather warning system are so on top of even bad thunder storms!
It makes up for it when you can wear shorts all year and Feb is awesome!
Are you moving with a job or retiring?
Right now, believe it or not,is considered low season ,so prices are a bit lower.
Summers are so hot here! High humidity and temp.
Orlando is a mess really...Kissimmee is tourist town central.....seriously ,huge problems with the roads.
Wrecks,serious fatalities everyday!
City manager could care less ,I talked to him after 5 kids died with their parents while here on vacation.
Orlando, everything closes so early too! No art worth speaking of,no good music unless you want to brave huge crowds and silly high cost at Disneyworld.
Good luck!

I wish we could vote out Mark Durbin as our city manager! He has had that job for 2 decades now and it is time for some new blood. Maybe then Kissimmee would be a good town to live in again!

Maybe good schools in some of those areas "Pianogal" mentions but East Orlando has been inundated with the hispanic population. Look up the demographics for each area and you'll find info like that. I'm a real estate agent and that's what we do for people.
Tivoli Woods, University High, Discovery Middle all filled to the brim with too much diversity. They just built a new school called Legacy. Watch out for boundaries since Realtors cannot guarantee school zones. Lake Mary is nice and Winter Park is a beauty or College Park is a cool little town although not sure about schools there.

Actually Tampa has not suffered damage from a Hurricane in the 17 years that I lived here. Orlando had damage from Hurricane Charley in 2004
