Wink Moving here to Orlando

Hey Jeffrey:
I am originally from Brooklyn, New York and I have been here in Orlando Fl, for the past 10 years this past February. I tried to read most of the responses you got, and some are true; since Crime is everywhere and yes, there may be bad areas and good areas, but, you will find this everywhere ~ I am sure of it.
I reside in an area, that most would say, "Uf, what an awful area", yet, I thank God, nothing has ever happened to me or my little family. I now have a grandson, whom I am raising in the same area, and its just a matter of searching and asking around the area you pick. Although, as I said, people mention my complex and say bad area, but it really isn't; I believe its the people that come from other areas in hiding or just passing.
Anyway, as to the finding an apartment, as one of the posts stated, its starts anywhere from $500.00 to 1000.00; it depends on what you want. You definately must know that apartments are completely different to the ones in Brooklyn, as I lived there myself, well born and raised and lived in Bay Ridge and thought that was great, but, believe me, when you rent here and you find, what you want (in my case, 2 bedroom 2 bathrooms) and all private, you won't want to return, unless of course you own your own home, and even those are different. I still dream of finding a house FOR RENT, but have not had luck or enough money. But thats another story....
As to your girl, not driving, definately one has to learn how to drive and get their license, even if you both share a car, because buses here are horrible, as to the wait and the waiting places, no shades and all, but, you manage, if you put your mind to it.
My oldest was still living in NYC and she also was tired of the trains and all of that, and her like me, left a salary of $17.00 per hour, and you do in fact leave that because the salaries here are low, but the rents too; if you budget it... so, anyway, just do the searching as one poster said, rents.com and careerbuilder.com and also monster.com, for jobs or Floridajobbank.com, those are good and more or less you have an idea.
I still live in my Orlando and if I had to move, I guess I would try Kissimmee for a little more life, since Orlando is quiet, but if you want something like NY, than that would mean a move to Miami, since they have the night life as our NY City.... But here all ends at 2 a.m., I miss my NY for that and some other things, but, what can I say, I have managed. Just have faith and continue to do research and ask around as you are doing. But always, count how many positives and negatives and keep in mind that everywhere has its crime, and its good too... Take care.

Question Where?!?!

WHERE can you find an Orlando apt going for $500 - $1,000 /month for rent?!?! Most apt rentals in decent communities in Orlando start at $1,000/mo. A 2/2 apt in a decent neighborhood would go for at least $1,300/mo. This has been the trend since foreclosures started to pick up and home prices have become un-attainable. People are being forced to rent and some are being foreclosed upon and are now forced

Are you talking about The Park apts in Winter Park? That is probably the only place in the Orlando area you can rent for an apt in that range. If you are, you will be living in the glorified ghetto... a trailer park molded in the shape of an apt building. Hell on earth. The Park is appalling.

Ps. You would move from Orlando to Kissimmee because "Orlando is more quiet"?!? Are you serious?! Orlando is NOT quiet at all! The only reason Kissimmee is noisy is because of the latin population blasting loud Spanish music on the street all hours of the night. And that is only fun for Spanish-speakers, not for the 90% of Americans who do not speak Spanish. Even if I spoke Spanish, I would NOT want to have people blasting music (even in English) all hours of the night. But I guess people in Kissimmee are ok with the loud music as it makes the area feel more like Puerto Rico or Mexico to them.

Rent here in NYC is getting too expensive....a studio starts at $1000 in almost all areas. a one bedroom apartment starts off at $1200 ( $1200 if you're lucky!!) ..and the prices are just going up...i don't want my girlfriend and i to end up homeless in NYC. I love this city because its so busy and theres a lot going on...been living here all my life, but we financially can't do it anymore.

im alil worried about the crime there...not too much me but my girlfriend tho. i'm in Brooklyn, NYC and i've lived in areas where i'd have to run and dodge bullets. I've seen/heard a lot of bad crimes and almost every night i hear gun shots outside my window. Living in these conditions made me a VERY 'tough' person. I know that no matter how tough a person is, things can still happen, but being extremely protective over our person is a way you have to live here in the city....will i have to live this way in Orlando??..Ive been watching my back in NYC for 26 years...i'm tired of it..

anywho ...question 3: How long do leases last for??? and do would we have to move when its up?..we're new to this apartment thing so we no nothing about leasing aprtments, but are willing to learn as much as we can. We already know that landlords take advantage of tenants, so if you can, please supply us with websites so that we can read up on Tenant rights for Orlando, if available...im in the process of looking for this but can find anything.

Please help. Give us all the info about Orlando...whether it be good or bad. Please be honest about your comments, this isn't a game!

thankyou

I wouldn't suggest moving to Orlando based on the fact that "ALL" New Yorkers I run into here seem to put it down and talk about moving back to where they are from all the time. I would suggest Nashville Tennessee or maybe Atlanta if you are trying to move south. It seems that the more Puerto Ricans that move to Orlando from up north the more problems we have down here with peoples' attitudes. Crime isn't going to be bad for you because of what you said about dodging bullets but hell every New Yorker makes claims like that right? .... Well i would probably stay there because you will only like the weather down here based on what my girlfriend from Long Island says and based on all the New Yorkers her that say there is nothing to do.....so good luck and hopefully they will all learn that they are making themselves more miserable in life by trying to prove how much better NY is and how tougher it is than actually living thier own lives......Good luck from a man in O-Town.

You do know they fudge stats in NYC a ****load?

Orlando has no East NY's or Brownsville's like Brooklyn. Not enough people for all the bull**** that goes on in those areas. The worst areas are like the worst areas in NYC, only less stuff going on becuase less people.

I would advice you to move down to Orlando. It's slow but if you have a family it shouldn't be that much of a problem. There's always something to do. Plus the weather is better and it's less depressing. I'm also considering Orlando.

I really doubt they mess with tha statistics in NY more than anywhere else. They probably don't report all the crime in Miami or New Orleans either and look how high the crime rates are in those cities compared to New York. I think the stories that come from New Yorkers come from the fact that it is the biggest city in our country so they think that they can do it any where if they did it in NY. Going by statistics i would say that New York isnt anywhere near as bad as East ST.Louis, Detroit, New Orleans, or most cities in the south and definatly not Miami. Most of the rappers from NY that visit Miami dont even chill in the city they all head over to tha beach and think they own the town. It does have highrise projects in New York and the sun doesnt shine as much but that doesnt mean it is worse than any other city. I think in New York in the projects that so many people are put in a small area and everyone has lots of people that they know to protect them from some other neighborhood...its different in the south. Now maybe back in the 70's and 80's New York could take the crown of being as dangerous as New Orleans or St' Louis now but not now. I get tired of these kids from New York coming down and saying stuff like it hurts more to get shot up in Hunts Point then it does down here in Miami or Orlando. The bullet does the same damage wherever you are....

Default CRIME? Where are you from? Mayberry?

You have OBVIOUSLY never lived or possibly ever been to NYC. The watching your back type feeling has very little to do with crime statistics. Probably only a fellow NYC'er can get what he means.

In NYC you don't have to have a car. In Florida you pretty much have to have at least some form of motorized transportation (I know some people who don't own cars, they get around by motorcycle or sometimes by bicycle). That's an expense that you don't have to pay in New York. Owning or leasing a car is a substantial expense.

In a nice part of town an economy apartment will cost you about 800-900 dollars a month. That's pretty high considering wages are peanuts here. I haven't lived in New York but I have lived in other areas and Orlando's pay to rent ratio isn't all that good.

My advice: think long and hard before you come down here. New York has problems but Orlando has problems too, and they aren't always obvious ones.

Please do your homework before moving down here. It is a totally different economy than the tri state area and a lot of the type of jobs you find up there are scarce to non-existant down here, and the competition to get those types of jobs are fierce. If you are in the service (restaurant) or hospitality industry, though, then you should have no trouble finding a job here.
