I was in the woods behind my house today and saw this small rodent. it was about the size of a large sand pear, gray, with a tail with no hair on it. It did not look like a rat, it wasa round animal crawling on branches rather quickly. the hair was short and it didnt have its head sticking out very far like a rat., nor did it have the face of a rat. It kind of looked like a Chinchilla but didnt have the long hair.

Any ideas as to what it is?

You made me laugh. We don't have chipmunks here like up north. Was it a field mouse maybe?

Here is a good list to start from with lots of photos...perhaps it was a shrew of some sort?

It didnt have a fuzzy tail so I dont think it was a squirrel, possums are more a light grey/ white with pronounced heads. Muskrats are larger. this was about the size of a guinea pig. No to Chipmunk, not the color or head.

I looked through the pictures and it looked most like the Eastern Mole, but this was in a tree. would a mole climb a tree?

Very likely it could have been some exotic pet that isn't native to Florida.
