OK, here's a South Florida sticker-shocked skeptic talking....what's going on with Oviedo? I might be working in north Orange County so I took a drive up to Oviedo last weekend to check it out. Pretty, clean, parks everywhere, UCF just down the road, shopping centers, all the conveniences of a large city nearby (Orlando is like right there), not too far from the coast, still with a few affordable homes. I don't get it, how can that be? Why wouldn't everyone in Orlando be living there? Did I miss a nuclear power plant, a landfill, a paper mill belching out noxious fumes? What?? The only thing that even mildly turned me off were the toll roads (kind of pricey, but very nice roads nonetheless), otherwise it's pretty darned near perfect. Clue me in if I've missed something please. Also, do you pronouce it O-vee-dough or O - V. A. -dough?

Nothing wrong with Oviedo. Sounds like the place for you. It's pronounced o-VEE-do, or for the natives, o-VEE-der.

Oviedo is Great!! I lived ther for 3 years till the move to Lake Mary. I really loved it there( even though I do not like FL.) I would have to say that Oviedo
is like living in NY. You will find alot of transplants from NY and NJ. They have their act together. A very progressive city. They are planning ahead for future growth. It was a small city w/ celery crops before the huge explosion. Downtown (which really isn't a real d-town) is older. And that is just that Older. Maybe 2 story builings...some chickens wanderring around. Very nice - close to everything. Enjoy it |

Most of Oviedo is a great area! There are parts that are a little spotty on the north side of the town. It's still a little less expensive because it is further from Orlando. The only way to get to Orlando is taking the 417 to the 408, both of which are toll roads. The commute time is about 45-50 minutes during the morning rush hour. So, Oviedo is not the first choice of areas to live in for those people who work in downtown Orlando. It's still a great area, though.

Oviedo is a wonderful suburb of Orlando. It's true, you do have alot of transplants from NY, NJ and other northern states (myself included), however, if you are familiar with NY's Long Island area, that's what this area reminds me of...very family friendly place. I have lived in several cities in Orlando (Orange & Seminole counties) and to me this is by far the best. Also, I know of many people who commute to Downtown Orlando everyday and have no problem with it. Yes, the tolls do add up, but the toll roads are well worth it. As far any sketchy areas go, they are few, considering that this town has exploded in new construction within the past several years. Crime is almost non-existent....so, local law enforcement tend to give out an excessive amount of speeding tickets.
That is definitely the one "caveat emptor" I must tell you...carefully observe the speed limits! |

Besides the distance from Orlando, the other downside is the proximity to UCF. I have a friend who bought a house in a nice subdivision in Oviedo and she was surprised to find the house next door was rented out to several UCF students who party all weekend, throw trash around the yard and do not clean up and are generally rude and disprespectful to their neighbors. I have heard this complaint many times before in this area. So if you are looking to purchase a home there I would make sure it is not too close to UCF, or find out if the homes in that area are rented or owned.

Yeah for Ovieder Chickens!
Oviedo is changing and has grown drastically in the last 3 years. Some of the nicest people in Central Florida are in this area. |
