Most of Middlesex, Hunterdon, Morris, Warren, Sussex, and Monmouth counties are very safe with great schools.

Also look at parts of Somerset, Mercer, western Union, some of Bergen.

Princeton, Belle Meade, Summit, Marlboro, Westfield, Peapack-Gladstone, Essex Fells, Scotch Plains, East Brunswick, Oradell, New Milford, Highland Park, Hillsborough, West Windsor/Plainsboro, Short Hills, Chester, North and South Brunswick, Montgomery Township, and Bridgewater would all be good places to start looking. They range from fairly metro to pretty rural.

Somerset township schools aren't so hot. I wouldn't suggest them. At one point they were good, they've gone downhill, most people I know who live in Somerset plan on being out of there before their kids start school.

There are plenty of good schools within Somerset County though.

Thanks a lot everyone for your replies. I feel much better now that I have a place to start searching for info... I will look into all of those... Seems like FL is not my best choice after all under the circumstances... The North is starting to sound much better for both of us... It's not easy being a single mom with a difficult child... but he's worth all the trouble...

This is helping me out as well as I am planning to move back to NJ this spring or summer. We should move this thread to the NJ forum, where we would get a better response.

I agree.. we have gotten some great responses so far... I went ahead and post it on the NJ forum as well under the same title so that it's easier to find...

Good luck!

Default counterpoint

For another perspective, I suggest you look at US News and world report academic ranking of high schools (Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report. You will, surprisingly, find that FLorida is well represented. While faculty at an Ivy league school I met a number of students from Winter Park High and other cities in the state that were outstanding and well prepared. So there are excellent programs for bright kids, at least at the high school level.
We have our kids in a private school as we moved only recently, but we have been very pleased as the teaching level is far better than at a top public school district in Boston. They are willing to individualize and allow students to work at 2-3 grade levels above their peers, while socially developing in the right grade level. We have heard from parents who are in public schools in Windemere, Dr Phillips and Winter Park and have heard very good reports.
I am certain there are standout schools here and probably many subpar schools also.
