Default Oviedo Marketplace Closing?

Just heard from my sister-in-law that the Oviedo Marketplace mall is closing. Anyone know if this is true? She couldn't remember where she heard it (she doesn't live in Oviedo, so it wouldn't be that big of news to her).

As much as this would really stink, I can't deny that the writing was on the wall for this to happen...starting all the way back when the mall opened at only 50% of it's intended design. the mall was supposed to have a mirrored image across Oviedo Marketplace Blvd (where the new town homes are now) and Oviedo Marketplace Blvd. itself was supposed to be the new restaurant row with all sorts of the big name chains. I have no idea why, when, or how the plan went sour. I remember the mall opening and folks thinking it was great and new-age looking, but surprised that it was so small. So it was a bullet in the foot for them by not finishing out the full development plan.

I do not know about closing altogether, but there was an article recently that malls in the Orlando area are having a hard time as outdoor shopping areas are doing much better. The hardest hit are the Oviedo Marketplace, Fashion Square, and West Oaks mall. Altamonte is considered somewhat healthy and the Mall at Millenia and Florida Mall are not as bad off. I looked for the article for more detail but I couldn't find it.

I saw an article from the Seminole Chronicle about the struggles Oviedo Marketplace was having (75% capacity, lack of management, tennants closing up shop, etc.) but nothing about closing. It's hard to imagine what would become of the strucrure if the mall up and left...

I too have heard Oviedo is closing. one stop in Fashion Square will show a ton of vacancies. Someone told me Altamonte was also in trouble. I have heard the same about West Oaks. Seems the malls are having a rough go of it.. as are their tenants. As I walk through Millinea I don't see many people with bags in hand. Expo is closing. Seems the baby business is strong as for what ever reson they are popping out everywhere...
Have you seen anyone buying at Crate and Barrel, Z Gallerie, Williams Sonoma, restoration Hardware... the list is long... and if we don't start buying from them they wont be around for long.
Doesn't look like the Bella Colina Mall will make it.
Ikea & Aldi's seems to be working overtime.. leave it to the Swedes and Germans to make it here. Guess straight forward, no nonsense works well here.....hmmm maybe there is a lesson for the car companies in that.

I haven't heard this was going to happen but the mall has alot of vacant areas, so I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually becomes a ghost mall.

I had heard this too. I was just out there a few weeks ago and it just felt "lonely".

With the population out there booming, this surprises me. I mean I enjoyed the lack of crowds but it's still sad.

The booming population is traveling down to Waterford. They are always insanely busy!

The problem with Waterford (at least when I lived there a year and a half ago) were the punk kids that parents dropped off and left there all night in front of the theaters. At least Oviedo's security guards kept the kids moving and didn't allow them to congregate. But, to no avail as the guards were accused many times of being too harsh. It's a no win situation.

Oh yeah. One think I do not like about Waterford is that theater. I have only been to Oviedo's once and I like it a ton more.
