Agreed, I'd probably look at east before south.

All depends on what your looking for and what YOU prefer. In general East Oralndo fit's more people's criteria, but there are also some nice area's in South Orlando to choose from, Hunters Creek and The Loop area.
So what are some of the amenities you prefer?

IF you stay past Union Park, then I agree with East. However Conway, Belle Isle, and a few scattered places on the south are very nice.

It depends on a number of factors. Where are you going to work. If your going to be working in the west of town you wouldnt choose the East because the East doesnt offer the same level of high speed roads which the West does and the commute would be killer. Do you have family you want to be close to. These are all questions which need addressing. each area offers a great deal and cannot be addressed by simply which is better as each area offers different things to different people. You need to give some info on you before anyone can answer this question.

For some reason I thought the Conway area was becoming a bit more "rough around the edges" than it used to be?

Depends on where you are looking at in The east and south really. Overall it is easier to say that the east side is nicer, but there are some nice areas on the South side and some undesirable areas on the east side as well.
