Default Orlando isn't a good place to live anymore

I lived in Orlando from the late 80's until 2000, it was getting pretty bad by the time I moved and nowdays it's just a *****hole. Some people posting here seem to feel that being the victim of a crime is the victim's fault - with that attitude what more do you need to know about the people in Orlando? There's definitely less crime elsewhere, when I moved it was like night and day. Not only is there very little crime where I live now, the people are a lot more pleasant in general. Orlando just isn't a very positive place to live.

Like other places there are some bad parts of town, but it's gotten to the point where it really doesn't matter where you live there. I think this is mostly because Orlando is a city of transients, and I don't just mean the homeless, just look at the number of rentals and homeowners who stay there just a handful of years before moving out of the area. Also Orlando has some very bad housing situations. Areas like Waterford Lakes for example amount to little more than upper-middle class slums. Gangs are all over the place (not all of them come from the ghetto) and it's no surprise as Orlando has very little to offer people in their teens.

You don't have to take part in a criminal activity to be involved in crime related violence either. Just follow the headlines for a month, you'll find plenty of incidents where innocent people get assaulted, usually shot, without ever having provoked it. Just this week a girl in a car on the north part of John Young Parkway was shot by men in a car that overtook hers - she didn't know the men and hadn't ever encountered them before, they just decided she looked like she needed shootin', apparently. Crimes like this are becoming more and more commonplace in Orlando.

I'll chime in here to answer the above question...

My wife and I gave up on Central Florida in June of 2007. We moved to Charlotte, NC. In brief the main reasons for leaving Orlando were:
- soaring crime
- devastated housing market
- traffic (and lack of future fixes)...both congestion and the complete idiocy of 90% of the drivers
- Jeb's tax "reform"
- overall changing Orlando populous that rounds all of the above reasons together
- a degraded and declining environment beyond saving

It kills me to bad mouth the place that I spent over 20 years growing up, but it is what it is. My family is still there and I can't wait for them to be able to escape one of these days. My brother is a cop for Orlando. The stories he tells me solidify my confidence in choosing to leave.

And by the way...it's not a police crack down that is needed (as one of the choices of this thread offers). It's a leadership issue. Politicians and police management need to grow a backbone and start setting some examples...starting with standing firmly behind officers when the poop hits the fan (i.e. when someone complains about being tased, they should reply with "you should have complied with the officer's commands" rather than suspend the officer for a week or two while they "investigate" the situation) There comes a time when enough is enough...and Orlando is far beyond that time.

Default Just retured from a Disney Christmas Vacation

I just returned home from a visit to Disney World. I wanted to see the parks during the Christmas season. I was not disappointed. The parks were wonderful, Christmas was everywhere. We stayed at one of the resort hotels, which was also decorated very well. The employees were all very nice and the trip was well worth the expense and effort. The area outside of the parks is another story all together. The people we encountered around town were low class, rude, vulgar and just a bunch of pigs. Sorry no other way to say it. Most spoke English, but, I still found it difficult to understand what they were saying. Most of the young men looked like gang members and the young women looked like prostitutes. Plenty of piercings and tattoos. I mean, if that’s your thing , well I guess it’s OK, but, I was just surprised to see such a large number all congregated in one area. I live in New Orleans, so, I’m use to low life people and high crime, but, New Orleans has been like that forever. This is something new for Orlando and I think it’s a real shame. No wonder the park security is so high. I predict that Disney’s days are numbered.
