I heard from someone recently that Florida Hospital South was #1 in the country for heart surgery.

Let me tell you how they almost killed me....

I was in there for heart surgery. They cancelled my surgery and when I asked why they began to verbally and psychologically abuse me.

I asked to be transferred to ORMC and they refused.

I talked to my doctor and she said I could leave against medical advice, she wrote discharge orders. I then told my nurse and called a cab.

As I was waiting outside the front door a cardiac nurse and two Security guards confronted me and refused to let me leave even though I had been discharged.

I got up and walked away and they tackled me from behind.

I tried to run but they pushed me into the pavement and choked me. I recieved 7 large skin tears.

I was forcibly dragged into the Emergency room where a guard was placed with me, and I was help prisoner for 3 hours.

A psychiatrist interviewed me.

Finally I was let go, my skin tears were not treated and I did not receive any treatment for my angina even though I had chest pain.

I finally reached ORMC ( another hospital ) by taking a bus there, where I was given good medical care and heart surgery the next day.

Today I recieved a bill for $450 from Florida Hospital Emergency Room for being kidnapped and held prisoner against my will.

Be careful before entering Florida Hospital South, they have a strange idea about health care, it is very similar to treatment you might receive from members of any organized crime outfit!

P.S. I field a complaint against Florida Hospital South with the state of Florida, and they sent me a letter saying Florida Hospital was within its medical correct procedures and they would not be cited!

I'm confused about your story. You were in the Emergency Dept or on a cardiac floor?

There seems to be a part of the story I'm missing. Why did you want to leave when they cancelled your surgery. Even if they rescheduled it probably would have been faster than going to a different hospital. . . why did you run instead of just walk out? This doesn't make sense? Care to share any more details to clear it up?

That is unlawful kidnapping, the same thing happened to me four years ago, they chemically incarcerated me in front of my then 10 year old son. It is a criminal act. Take it to The DOH. It may take along time, however in the end you will receive justice. I still have the most horrific nightmare with regard to this incident. They make you stay in order to charge you.

Just $450? The standard fee is something along the lines of $1000. I was in recently for kidney stones - 3 hours worth that ended up being over $12k. Something is off here. Heart surgery is something that has to be planned months in advance with major preparation. It's not something that you can just take a bus to and get treatment for.

I was told a few years ago that they were #1 in cardiovascular surgery volume nationwide. As for quality, they at one time appeared in the USN&WR best hospitals rankings in a few minor categories, I remember something like 35th or so in endocrinology, but I not in heart surgery nor cardiac care. They haven't been on that list in a few year for anything cardiac related, perhaps nothing at all, certainly not anything particularly significant and never very high, which makes their PR campaign that is based on this recognition particularly amusing - imagine a billboard that says "USN&WR's Best Hospitals named us - 38th in Thyroid Care!!!". They are a profoundly mediocre institution that is more interested in promoting their offshoot faith, expanding their influence, and making money than they are providing any sort of quality care. They are a very bottom line yet self righteous institution, as Kitty can attest to.

I'm with you all the way up to the point you were told that you could leave AMA. People get up and walk out of hospitals all the time against medical advice.

There is one exception to this. That exception is if they think you have a psychiactric problem. I've seen people who have been Backer-Acted before, and the times that I've seen this (two times), both people were truly delusional and violent or suicidal. They can Baker-Act you and hold you for a period (I think it's 48 or 72 hours, but can't recall) of time until you are evaluated. Hospitals do not routinely Baker-Act people. It's a pain in their rear to do this. It means lots of paperwork, added liability, eventual court involvement, psych involvement, etc. But, if a hospital did Baker-Act you, then there is quite a bit of information you are not divulging here. I can't blame you for not providing us those details if they exist, but if you are going to slam Florida Hospital - which happens to be quite a good and caring hospital, then you really need to tell us what happened to permit them to Baker-Act you.

If the Hospital did not Baker-Act you (which they must have, since you said that you were evaluated by a psych), but simply tackled you for no reason other than you were trying to leave, then go get a lawyer and have a good time with them! The ball would be in your court.

I just decided to research people who have had issues with Florida Hospital South because I rushed my fiance there for DKA (he's diabetic) over the weekend. It was the worst care I have ever received. I brought him in there in the first place because his sugar was at 525... after 2 days in the hospital's care... they let his sugar get back up to 300 because they "forgot" to give him insulin at the correct time because "a situation" came up... THEN when we go to get discharged the nurse informs us that the family practice doctor has CHANGED his insulin (mind you, without consulting his endocrinologist)... so we leave, and before we fill his NEW INSULIN prescription we call the endocrinologist to ask how to administer the new insulin, since no one in the hospital could give us any instructions... and his endocrinologists says absolutely do not fill that prescription, you need to be on the insulin you were on before... its best for your body... and called in the right insulin for us.

I was appalled that they would make such a move without consulting one specialist... and was also less than impressed when his postassium IV ran out and our machine beeped for 90 minutes before a nurse came and switched it to his second dose.

I will never go back and am in the process of reporting this situation.

Default ...and that's what they're GOOD at.

Well, as I noted above, it was actually endocrinology only that got them on the Best Hospitals list.

What you have to realize is that hospitals now are a huge counterweight to primary care. They really don't want it, since without it more and more people seek care through the ER. ER care affords (pun there) hospitals the opportunity to increase their bottom line. There is little disagreement that patients who present to the ER for care receive, even adjusting for severity, far, far more "care" than they would get if presenting to a primary care physician.

E.g., few patients with a migraine get an MRI when they present to a physician's office, yet many when they present to an ER. That's not to say that it isn't justifiable, given that the patient may not be known to the ER physician, but that's the point - had the patient been known they likely wouldn't have had it. Ergo, seeking care through an office significantly decreases hospital revenue.

And so hospitals, which represent the big sucking hole of health care spending, really don't either want to waste their time nor decrease their revenue through support of primary care. Why should they? Because they are unfairly competing with them already. Physicians pay for their own office and staff; hospital based physicians are sponsored. ER care is subsidized; office care is not.

And, besides that, hospitals are a huge player in setting "health care policy". When ORHS decided to get the governemnt to subsidize neurosurgery in order to maintain their Level 1 Trauma Center, Orange county sent Osceola a bill for $800,000 for "their fair share". And they paid it. Seminole county told them where to go. Meanwhile, Osceola county has a shortage of more than 100 family physicians for which they are doing - nothing. It's a choice to have a Level 1 Trauma Center over primary care, and the government made it with input from - hospitals.
