Crackdown On Downtown Orlando Crime Nabs 25
Police Say Groups Gather On First Wednesday Night Of Month

POSTED: 7:04 am EDT April 5, 2007
UPDATED: 9:39 am EDT April 5, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. -- More than 25 people were taken into custody late Wednesday and early Thursday in a police crackdown on crime in the downtown Orlando area, according to police.

Officers said people like to gather in public places in downtown on the first Wednesday night of each month.

"Often times on these first Wednesday nights, they hear gunshots and that is why they had this crackdown," Local 6's Charnel Wright said.

rlando police pulled over drivers playing loud music, red-light runners, and motorists with expired tags at traffic stops in the Central Avenue area of Orlando early Thursday.

"We had numerous arrests for cocaine, marijuana, we recovered four guns out of the vehicles and wrote 21 traffic citations," Orlando police Sgt. Ronda Huckelbery said.

Police activated extra officers for the operation, Local 6 reported.
