Areas to avoid in Orlando
We are planning a vacation in Orlando later this year with family who have a time-share condo there. In reading about Orlando to find things we might like to do I have come to realize that Orlando has the second highest violent crime rate and fourth highest property crime rate in the US, for cities between 100,000 and 250,000 in population. This is in crime rates per 100,000 people. These crime rates are much higher then the City I live in, Austin, TX which is a larger city.
I know that in every City most of the crime occurs in specific neighborhoods, so we would like to avoid those areas if at all possible. Unfortunately, my efforts to identify those area by looking at the Orlando Police Dept. and State of Florida law enforcement websites have not been fruitful. Its so hard to find that data I'm inclined to think they are hiding it on purpose. That kind of data, sorted by zip-code is easy to find on the City of Austin website. City of Austin - Crime Information
Since I don't yet know the "neighborhood" names, I would appreciate it if some of you could identify what zip-code areas to avoid. This zipcode map makes it easy to identify the areas.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll get the ball rolling...32808 / 32818, Pine Hills, aka "Crime Hills", the most notorious area in Orlando.
This is also a good resource:

In all honesty you're not really going to find anything touristy in the worst parts of Orlando.

Wow, they are building the new arena right next to that and trying to redevelop it?

Cheap land and a constituency that doesn't have the resources to fight to save their homes from eminent domain and landlords happy to take the cash and run. It's no different than many other cities with a downtown arena. They are usually in a bad area--or what was a bad area.
And the current arena and stadium are already there.

Don't let the proximity to 32805 scare you from visiting the Lake Eola area. It's quite safe. I think any visitor to Orlando should see this area of downtown/Thornton Park. Just don't take any kids down there at night on a weekend unless you want them to have an eyeful of drunken Orlando nightlife. Also drive up Park Ave in Winter Park to see upscale, old money Orlando.

Annerk is on point as usual. Zip codes do not give an accurate evaluation of crime. Pine hills gets the reputation but don't forget about Carver Shores, Malibu Shores, Texas and Americana Blvd, etc. But like Annerk said, most tourists will not end up in these areas.
