Default 20 moving to orlando from northeast

I currently live in Ocean City NJ which is a big tourist town not on the large scale as orlando however, and considering moving to the Orlando area. I really would like to eventually goto UCF but will probably goto community for a semester or two and then transfer. It is going to be me and a friend, I'm 20 he's 21. We are trying to find out where the best place to live is that would give us the opportunity to have some fun and meet other people our age. A furnished apartment would be great but I do not want something that is for college freshman like jefferson village which has individual leases. Also we are on a tight budget and it is very important to find a job quickly. Im a hospitality major and have been managing a restaurant and working there for 3 years. I assume finding a job in a bar or restaurant in Orlando will not be hard. Another thing many people have told me is it is important to move before the start of the school year because all of the ucf students will take all of the apartments and jobs.

Sorry for the long post and possibly repeating topics discussed before. I would really appreciate your help, so I do not have to take numerous trips to florida before moving.

You are NOT going to easily find a job here. Most of the theme parks have hiring freezes on, and the local businesses won't even hand you an application until you are living ehre full time.

In all honesty you'd be better staying in school there and applying to the Disney College Program to work here for a semester. That will give you time to look at the area and decide if moving here is really the right thing to do.

FL is number 2 in the nation in filing new claims for unemployment. Both Orlando and Tampa are listed as two of the worst places to find work.

It may not be what you want to hear, but you said you have limited savings.

It really isn't a good idea to move anywhere right now without a job waiting for you, but especially here.

People who never thought they would be out of white collar jobs are competing with others for restaurant work.

Guys I understand the unemployment level lately and the economy but I do not know what jobs that particularly affects in orlando. As far as I'm aware orlando has to be one of the largest tourist destinations in the country. Also I'm not looking for a career just a job to get though school. Its not like things are good in Philadelphia either. Continued replies and opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

I may only be from NY right now, but I will tell you that I totally understand your point as just being in college and not a career job, unfortunately I can't help with where to live or that kinda thing, but I hope you go and do well

ALL industries have been impacted, particularly construction and hospitality. People aren't eating out as much, and restaurants have cut back on staff. A friend of mine works as a server for a mid-range chain restaurant, and if I hadn't "saved her night with a large check" (her words) a week ago she would have had one party with a small tab all night. I have three riends who are certified master sommoliers who are out of work, and know of two restaurant managers who were recently let go when their locations were closed.

Tourists are still coming, but they aren't spending the money to eat out.

You know what OP? Do your own research, make the decision yourself and do yourself a favor and only come on here with specific questions regarding a neighborhood or a company or something, everything else you hear from me, or anyone else should not make or break the decision..I can only hope in this thread you get more responses to your actual question which seemed to be

"We are trying to find out where the best place to live is that would give us the opportunity to have some fun and meet other people our age."

Probably the least expensive area that is still safe and near everything would be Colonialtown. You can rent a 3 BR house for under $1000 a month.

There was even a drastic decrease in snowbirds this past winter. It was reported in the paper and even driving around there were fewer out of state plates.

We talked to one server that we know from a place we eat at on regular basis.

Business is down by more than 50% and her hours have been cut.

The thing is" you can't tell people what they don't want to hear". JMO, but I would rather know the truth then to be told misinformation.

I really don't think anyone should look to a message board like this for life changing decisions.

I am amazed at some of the questions people ask when they need to do their own research. Like "How do I apply for a job at Disney and are they hiring?".

You need to do that research yourself.
