I am starting to think I am in Kansas. That is where they tell kids in schools that is where they have a lot of tornadoes (and in Oklahoma).
This is the 3rd time since Christmas 2006 that we have had devastating storms and tornadoes in Central Florida. That is 5 months and 3 major tornado storms rip through the area. If you need a recap, we have had: 1. Christmas Day tornadoes. Killed a bunch people people. Not that much media attention (not sure why, people's lives were ruined). 2. The tornadoes that literally RAZED THE VILLAGES TO THE GROUND. Killed a ton of people. Got a lot of media attention because even houses were tore up. 3. Todays (Sunday 4/15/07). Reports have not yet come in, but we know of two areas that are basically ruined. - See report below. Tornado, Severe Storms Roll Through Central Florida POSTED: 3:59 pm EDT April 15, 2007 UPDATED: 4:03 pm EDT April 15, 2007 DUNDEE, Fla. -- A tornado damaged a mobile home park, but caused no injuries as a line of powerful thunderstorms swept across the state Sunday, authorities said. The tornado touched down near the Del Lake Village mobile home park in Dundee and damaged some of the homes, said Dundee Police Department operator Rebecca Garcia. "It's just chaotic out there," Garcia said. *** Now here is my question: Do people who wants to move to Central FL know about the tornado problem? This doesn't happen when hurricanes come throught - it happens all the time, year round. Check the poll. Thanks! |

it is amazing to me how many tornadoes seem to come through the area, but come on, do not live in a mobile home in florida where CLEARLY we DO ACTUALLY GET THESE THINGS NOT TO MENTION HURRICANES and even a strong summer thunderstorm can flatten a shed (happened to me with me in it...could have been a tornado, but i dont think so). It never ceases to amaze me how many people come to florida to live in a trailer. i would not live in a trailer period, let alone in florida. however my thoughts and prayers still go out, just it is unbelievable that coincidentally anytime/any kind of storm that comes by unleashes all its fury on a) the retired, and b) the trailer parks. WOW!

Would Tampa have a greater chance than the Orlando area of getting hit by a tornado?

NG, where are you from? New York? We've had tornados in Florida since the beginning of time. Hurricanes, hail and lightning storms as well. Is this really all that new to you?

Tornado are caused by quick changed in temperature and atmospheric pressure. The cool air moves down and hot air move sup causing the funnel clouds. This usually happens more inland than in Costal Tampa.
Now, the problem is: in Tampa, you are sitting in the HOT gulf of Mexico waters and hurricanes fuel up really well there. So during the year, you run less risks of getting hit by a tornado, BUT you have a high change of getting slammed by a hurricane. And before/during/after a hurricane, tornadoes form all over the place. So really, in Tampa you are getting a slam during a hurricane, but yes, inland, specially in Lake county and The Villages, you get a lot of tornadoes. |

Thanks everyone. I know that tornadoes can happen during a hurricane, but atleast with a hurricane, the meteoroligists give you some warning to evacuate before getting hit by one. When dealing with tornadoes, no one can really predict when they will happen.

I've been through (actually been through, not watched on the news) 4 tornadoes in Florida. 1 in Sanford, 1 in Sebastian Inlet, 1 in New Smyrna Beach and 1 in Tampa. I'm not going to count what they thought was a tornado that did the damage to my neighborhood during hurricane Charley, since that can't be confirmed. I've seen many waterspouts on both coasts. In my experience tornadoes are much more frequent over coastal waters and nearby areas. |

FloridaImpressions, when the coast does have a tornado, aren't they normally low category ones? From listening to the news, I rarely hear of a coastal tornado causing devastation. OR does the coast also have higher Cat tornadoes?
