Safety-wise, Altamonte is ok. It used to be better, even though it was a lot of college kids. But nowadays, it has gotten SO EXTREMELY CROWDED that crime is begining to pick-up there too.
There is a lot more litter on the roads, a lot more trash on sidealks, a few homeless people began to appear too. Traffic in Alta TOTALLY SUCKS! I am serious, it is really bad. It's noisy there too, 24/7. Not fun. Consider Oviedo, Winter Springs, Longwood, and Lake Mary as alternatives. Alta is getting expensive too, as "Uptown Altamonte" is building some expensive condos (very small, not worth it). |

Altamonte is a good choice for a relatively safe suburb. There are substantially more condominiums and appartments in that area to choose from than in other areas. No place is perfect, but it is one of Orlando's largest shopping and retail districts. It has easy access to I-4, and isn't too bad of a commute to downtown Orlando. Traffic on 436 is heavy. West of Altamonte, going toward Apopka isn't all that great, and I'm not to fond of the area along SR 427 (Regan Blvd.) that intersects 436. Although there is some crime in Altamonte, I wouldn't call it a high crime area.
If I were just out of college and looking for an appartment, Altamonte would be one of the places I'd seriously be taking a look at. I'd also look off of University Blvd, but not too close to the school. I recall there being some decent appartments over there. |

Altamonte Springs is pretty safe but traffic tends to get very heavy especially near I-4/Altamonte Mall area. If you are commuting on a daily basis from there to let's say, the east side of Orlando, traffic will be a major pain. If you work around Altamonte though, I say go for it. Another alternative if you want to live around this neck of the woods is Maitland.

Alta is pretty safe is just the traffic that is bad.
If you need help locating a property for renting or sale let me know. |

Ask any ASPD officer what they think. Altamonte isn't safe at all anymore...

Safety is relative. Altamonte is very safe compared to Paramore. It is not safe compared to Isleworth. |

Well, my husband was robbed at gunpoint while driving home from work one night. A schoolmate of his (about 6 years ago) was raped and beaten while running along Jamestown Blvd. My mother's car was stolen from the Altamonte Mall parking lot.
But like I said, you can ask a police officer, I might just know people with bad luck. |

I lived in Altamonte Springs for about 2 years on Spanish Trace drive which is right next to I-4 which was convienent. In the mornings, going to work in Orlando the commute is usually about 40 - 50 minutes. Traffic is really bad though going on I-4 W towards Orlando but much better at night. There is plenty of shopping and the area is being built up. Lots of new apartments, a little expensive though. Uptown Altamonte is very nice. Crime has been going up lately though. Altamonte Springs is a small area but there are plenty of people that move there and plenty of good shopping. Other cities that surround that area are Longwood (which is a nicer area), Apopka, (not so nice), Castleberry (a little congested and not so nice), Lake Mary (very nice) and Sanford (not so nice from what I keep hearing).
If I had the choice to do it over again I would choose Lake Mary instead of Altamonte Springs even though I enjoyed my stay there. Lake Mary has more jobs and overall a much nicer area. I live in Cape Canaveral now(temporarily), not exactly a picturesque town but very friendly, very laid back, people like to ride their bikes around here a lot, very quiet and low crime and very close to all the beaches. If you are thinking of moving to Altamonte Springs, I would recommend it but like every other place there are certain places to avoid. |

I moved to FL 3 years ago and have been in Alt. Sprgs. for all 3. I'm at 436/434 and I really like this area. Great shopping/restaurants/etc. I wouldn't live too much east of the mall area off 436 though - that gets ghetto FAST. Err on the side of north towards Longwood and west of the mall before Apopka.
But traffic is pretty bad. It can take about 10 min to go about 2 miles. I'm used to planning for that now. I'm about 15 min away from the mall. But rush hour in the morning is about a 20+ min commute to the I4 on ramp. Ugh. I've never had an issue with safety, but I also never go out at night to stores/etc. by myself. But if I would do that anywhere, it would be here. The only thing about Alt.Spgs. that worries me is the new Cranes Roost condos. I can only imagine the extra horrendous traffic that will bring. Yikes. Just keep your common sense about your surroundings and don't let your guard down anywhere in Orlando. Don't live in fear, but live realistically. |
