Is a film degree from Full Sail University legit in the business? I've heard some not so great things about this university like they have classes at all hours of the day and don't care if the students have to work other jobs to save money for college and/or dont care about the students getting enough sleep etc.

????

They do ahve classes at all hours of the day, and it's VERY intense. You pretty much need to give them 100% of your life.

But, they are a fully accredited university and they have become a leader in many of the programs they offer because they don't just teach, but they immerse their students and give them a lot of real life experience. Students graduate understanding that productions don't run on a 9-5 schedule, and are used to working all sorts of long and crazy hours to get the job done.

If you are looking for a 9-5 job, the film industry isn't going to be for you.

Again...I have to state, Full Sail is NOT an accredited university...it's really becoming an urban legend that they are...they have some bizarre regional accredation. ..but here is the link and they are not on it.

http://www.sacscoc.org/searchResults.asp (broken link)

If you have to transfer credits, they are not likely to be accepted elsewhere. But, it is supposedly a decent school for the entertainment industry. Again tho, NOT ACCREDITED!

Here is a link from last year to a fellow who stated even the army won't recognize his 4 year bachelors from Full sail...(pardon the language in this link...) Maxforums - Full Sail: All Aboard the Fail Boat
And within the thread someone recommends a program at UCF as being a better , cheaper option.

And this fellow's 'day in the life' description of his experience (he apparently failed out of the intense program at Full Sail, after investing 40k into his education there)
GameDev.net - Lessons from a Full Sail Game Design Failure

So just some info to add to the mix.

I also have to add, that my hubby is a music guy with a recording studio, and one of his good buddies went to Full Sail for audio engineering and did graduate. He loved it there, worked for us for a while, and went on to Sigma sound in Philly as an audio engineer and now has his own recording studio and is doing very well - so it is not that I am down on this school at all! You just need to know what it is, and what it can and cannot do for you...OK!

Full Sail is accredited by ACCSCT. ACCSCT is recognized by the US DOE as a non-profit, independent accrediting agency. So Full Sail IS accredited.

Not in the traditional sense that 99% of all other Universities are considered "accredited"

Who are they accredited by ? Because from what I saw they are by All Full Sail degree programs are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). This is not a good college accreditation. These credits more than likely will never transfer to any real school. This is more or less the ITT of movies web graphics. If someone is serious and decided this is their life at 30 then yes a good school. But for someone at 18 who doesnt know what the hell they should do I would never recommend this school. A person that is young should go to a normal college first just incase.

For those who have a passion for the production side of the music or film industry, Full Sail is a good school with real world experience, even for an 18 year old.

But for someone who isn't really focused, I agree they should spend a couple years at community college first.

IT's a WASTE of money...don't go there! At least not if you plan on staying in Orlando. Most professionals in this area consider Full Sail a joke. I'm a graphic designer, and my husband is a videographer. Full Sail is not going to land you a creative job. Your resume, portfolio and work history will. Full Sail will get you an internship (and that's it), and you will be treated like a grunt and given no respect by people in the work field. This is because lots of rich kids decided they wanted to go to Full Sail and didn't put in the effort and caused a bad rap for the school. They will accept any applicant as long as you pay. The school has a much better reputation outside of Central Florida. But, if you talk to any creative studio in the area, they will tell you the same thing.
