Can anyone suggest a nice family friendly beach to spend a week at, it has to be fairly close to Orlando as family will be flying in to there from the UK.
Thanks.

Most of them. Do you want calm, warm Gulf waters or cooler waves from the Atlantic? Crowds, no crowds? Popular or remote? Fun, tacky, touristy, or subdued mostly locals?

Tell us what you vision of a nice beach holiday is and we'll help you with suggestions.

Treasure Island. On the Gulf about 2 hrs from Orlando. That's my favorite.

Yes, I guess that would help...sorry :-)

I don't want too many crowds but at the same time we'll have at least 5 kids between the ages of 8 and 17 to entertain. Don't like tacky boardwalks, do like boogie boarding and snorkeling. MIL lives near Destin up in the gulf and it's beautiful there, are the beaches on the west coast of FL similar? I live in NJ and swim in the Atlantic in summer, I don't find it cold so I'm sure down there we'll be fine. Something to entertain the kids if it rains and that's about it really.

We prefer the Gulf side.

If you are already in the Orlando attractions area, the closest beach, and easiest to get to would be Cocoa beach. Highway 528 (renamed to the "Beachline") will take you straight there. You will also be right next to all the Cape Canaveral NASA stuff.
THey say that Cocoa Beach is so close that a lot of people keep their Orlando Hotel room and just do a day jaunt to the beach.
Just dont stop in Cocoa for anything.

As the other posters suggested, the Gulf side is nice, though not great for boogie boarding. New Smyrna Beach and Cocoa have good waves (although hard core surfers have expressed disappointment at the size). NSB doesn't have much for kids when it rains, but it is pretty wide and you can drive on it. I've only been to Cocoa a few times many years ago and the sand had trash in it (wrappers, cigarette butts). Maybe someone else knows if it's clean these days?

What time of year are you planning to spend your vacation. Florida doesn't get much rain from September through June. I personally would recommend the Gulf coast, treaure Island, St petes and Madeira beach are beautifull.

Also don't forget you got Busch Gardens, not too far away from the beaches.
