The main reason I wanted to move was to get away from the crime, I guess I better look for another city. If you think you got it bad over there, here in PR the murder rate is 229 this year alone. Mostly drug related, but still it's bad. And it's not like I can't go outside my house and feel unsafe, but you have to be carefull this being an Island so small and all.

Is Port Orange a large city or is it very rural?

Yeah I would be interested in 2006 numbers because crime went way up. This is an interesting link - back in 2005 Orlando was wayyyyy below a lot of cities people seem to think are better.

One always has to consider a major portion of crime in O'ville is due to the large number of tourist related crimes.Car theft and car break ins account for a lot of crime here. Also Florida in general is a haven for elderly related scams and rip offs.Oh yeah, sometimes drugs find their way from the port cities and make it inland.

Orlando is experiencing some major growing pains. Naturally, this leads to an increase in crime rate. The population has exploded in the past several years. According to the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, the population of Orange County (which is basically Metro Orlando) in 2000 was 896,344. In 2006, it was 1,033,047. That is close to 23,000 people a year moving into the city. You can look at the pdf document here:

http://www.orlandoedc.com/core/filep...yCity_2006.pdf

With that said, Orlando is a very spread out and crime is not running rampant everywhere. There are certain areas that are hot spots for crime and there are many articles from local sources that indicate which ones they are. You just have to do your research.

Default Crime in Orlando, moving to Heathrow

I live in College Park in downtown Orlando and have no choice but to move to 'safer grounds' - very reluctantly - because of constant break-ins, armed robberies along College Park's main artery ( Edgewater Drive) etc.

With a limited budget and not enough officers to cover our district we are in a real crisis. Hopefully our City Officials wake up and smell the coffee before everything is spiraling out of control.

We are considering Heathrow (Alaqua) but afraid of being too isolated up there (we are minutes away from everything in the heart of the city).

I wonder if anyone has input as to how the lifestyle is 'up there'. My husband is a Heathrow CC member , but I'm not into the 'cookie cutter lifestyle'....

Could the transition from urbia to suburbia too drastic?

Orlando is A LOT better then Puerto Rico in terms of crime. Quality of life is higher as well. Gov't is more stable, less corruption, less pollution. Culture is different.

The people posting here have no idea how bad it is in PR. There are housing projects in Puerto Rico have more murders per year then the entire city of Orlando. And murders are not the half of it, include robberies and assualts which are very common on the island. Drug addicts and poor everywhere, comitting crimes.

Of course there are bad areas in Orlando, but they do not compare with the going ons of PR. PR is a high drug traffic location, a gateway into the USA. Gangs are obliterating each other to take control of the drugs flowing through the island. That includes anyone in their way. The weapons of choice in PR are AK-47's and M-16's. Killing anyone in the cross fire.

Orlando is a nice move, especially if you are from a high crime section of PR. There is a growing PR population in Orlando. Just make sure you choose a decent neighborhood, so you won't have to deal with any problems you want to leave behind.

I know there are some parts of Orlando where crime is a serious problem. There is no denying that. However the crime problems in Puerto Rico are on another level entirely.

It's up to the OP to find a decent neighborhood in Orlando.
