Hello,

I'm new at this forum and this is my first post. We are also considering to move to Clermont, Minneola or Mascotte, We are close to retirement and are empty nesters. What do you mean by "Mascotte, well that's another story".

Mascotte is not overly desirable. You just kind of have to see it to understand.

We've lived in Groveland for 5 years now. We moved down here during the housing boom and started looking at Clermont but couldn't find anything reasonable so we live just across the Clermont border in Groveland off of Hwy 50. There are lots of nice neighborhoods outside of downtown Groveland, especially the east side near clermont.

The downtown area of Groveland we avoid - the wife when we first moved here worked at Gray middle school and would do home visits to families around that area and saw lots of poverty and crime. That area around the middle school is known to be very crime/drug infested. That said, much of Groveland away from downtown is nice.

Mascotte seems a bit worse. What really blew our minds was a year or two ago the day before the mayoral election there they arrested the leading candidate and then current mayor for supposedly showing porn to a teenager, but two days after the election (which he lost) all the charges were dropped. Sounds like some really nasty politics there. That and just a few weeks ago Mascotte was considering allowing a company to build a trash dump there until the community did a large protest and stopped it.

The area of Clermont on Hwy50 and south on 27 are really booming, so we consider ourselves on the outskirts of the "Orlando" area. Travel west of Groveland and it's all rural (when we first moved here I had to drive to Tampa to work, so drove 50 west every day).

My $0.02 anyway...

Downtown Groveland didn't seem too bad. In fact, it seemed pretty active, especially given Groveland's size. The crowd in the general/hardware store was very nice and talkative.

If you mean the new Ace hardware, that's a bit west of what I'd refer to as the down town area (i.e. Hwy 50 between 19 and 33). I was referring to the area just south of down town and the area around 50 & 33 (especially the area just SE of there).

I was talking about the area around the 50/19 intersection, from Hardee's to maybe two blocks east of 19. I'm not around the area much at all, so maybe I came on a good day.

Thanks for the comments. Knowing specific trouble spots helps. We are moving to the Clermont area from Miami. Even with the crime, drugs and nasty politics, the area will probably be more peaceful & less crowded.

I haven't seen any comments about Minneola. This is our second area of choice.

Crime, drugs, nasty politics? In Clermont? Not really. Most of the crime here happens in two small areas, literally limited to a couple block radius in each. One isn't even within the City limits of Clermont, but rather is handled by the Lake County Sheriff's department in an unincorporated part of Lake County that happens to share a Clermont mailing address. The other is a smaller part of the area considered "downtown" Clermont, an older area that's easy enough to avoid. And even at that, it's not like there are constant drive-by shootings and such.

I'm sure there are some drugs, but there are drugs everywhere. They aren't pervasive, and it's not like there are dealers on the corners like I've seen on Americana Blvd. in Orlando. You would have to work at seeking out the drugs in Clermont, I've lived here six years and have never had anyone offer me drugs, not do I know anyone in Clermont who does drugs.

Even our politicians are generally respectful of each other. In fact Minneola is where the politics seem to get particularly nasty--well, there and Mascotte. We have a balanced budget and in my opinion good services. No complaints at all about the job our elected officials in Clermont are doing.

Thanks Annerk. We will be in Clermont Sep 22 to view homes with a realtor. We will also be driving around getting to know the area and sight seeing. All I have heard about Clermont is positive. We do have one home selected in Groveland which is east of downtown Groveland near Lake Minneola. This is probably where Joe Noone lives. Right Joe?
