We walk to Publix, CVS, Sun Trust and restaurants in Baldwin Park. It takes a whopping 10 minutes to get to "town". What traffic?
We are retired and like Orlando very much and visit WDW and Seaworld, the beaches etc.
We bike the trail around Lake Baldwin and the Cady Way.

This person said 20 minutes to the beach. I don't know how people are putting Orlando metro area towns (Baldwin Park and The Villages) when close proximity to the beach was a criteria.

The best answer would be Sarasota or Ft. Lauderdale - if you can afford to live in a nicer area of Broward either right out on A1A or someplace like Coconut Creek or Deerfield Beach. 3rd place would be somewhere between Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine probably.

Orlando's crime rate is up, particularly the violent crime index. Orlando's increase in crime stats are equal to or greater than such cities as Baltimore, Oakland and Philadelphia. CQ Press: City Crime Rankings 2009

We drive north 2 miles to our new shopping center. There is sooo much to do here for retirees, we never even get to the beaches!! We have Disney annual passes and are thinking of getting Universal as well. Everyone that visits us, wants to live here. We are not in a reirement community as we don't like all the restrictions and there are many retirees around where we live. By the way, our beautiful Publix is a block away, no hassles whatsoever. Sometimes we walk there!!
We are also considering your area for semi-retirement, whynot66...care to share info on where NOT to look? We are looking for a quieter (safe) 2nd home for now & will visit often but will be full-time Floridians in 2 yrs. 7 miles to WDW sounds perfect!!!

Enjoyed reading your post. My husband and I who are 60+ are starting to explore our desire to move to the Orlando area. We presently live in Richmond, Virginia. We love the beach and would love to be in a retiree oriented city with lots to do!? Any specific neighborhoods, 55+ over communities, etc.l would you recommend in the Windermere/Winter Garden area. We will only have our Pug Molly with us! Thank you for any information you can share!

Have a great day! Gloria and Dennis Ritenour Ritenour2@hotmail.com

Stuart FL, A very very good police force. They usually arrive within 5-10 minutes of a call. WP Beach Airport is about 40 minutes away. 3 beaches. ..some crime..but not where you will live. The local medical facility is very good, but make sure they take your insurance. Home prices have really come down..lots of homes for sale. I lived in an area called Rocky Point, which was nice, quiet.... We lived in Stuart and moved because it is more for a retirement community than those with kids...we relocated to Orlando to be near UCF....

Brevard/Space Coast is a great place to live and retire (28 years now)!! However, Brevard is a 50 mile long county -- I would suggest something between Cocoa Beach and Melbourne.

Not sure about the conservative/progressive assessment (?) - There is a broad range of people here! Since it is more family-oriented, some may view it as more 'conservative,' but, if you look at the Florida Today Newspaper, you will find it just as liberal ('progressive'?) as anyplace else. Good luck

Lucky Dog...Where ever you decide, try to take the time and rent in the area first. See how you like the local stores, traffic and distances that you have to drive to get to the services/entertainment that you are looking for. You also learn the area and the routes/roads to avoid at certain times of the day. I live in Solivita a +55 community and I like it. We're South of Orlando, about an hour away. So it's quiet here and the big city hustle and bustle is just a drive away.
