Toss-up between something's up on my street/with my neighbor or some kind of bad news (found your dog, something's happened to someone, etc).

My daughter isn't home from the drive in movies yet....so if the police were to knock right now....yeah, I would probably lose it.

My first thought would be that something bad happened to my mum or dad

My first thoughts would probably be that they want something from someone who lives here/someone here is in trouble. Then I'd start worrying that something bad happened to someone.
Or I'd think that maybe they were trying to raise money or something.

Living about a block from the police station, the last time we had them knocking at our door was when my dad set off fireworks on new years eve and the neighbors reported us.

Talking .

I checked “other”; because they’re here to tell me the witness protection is over and I need to keep an eye on my back. I’m the guy who blew the whistle on the recipe for the McDonald’s secrete sauce for the Big Mac, and the corporate goons are looking for me. The guy who blew the whistle and told how they keep the sesame seeds stuck on the buns was found and pushed off the subway platform just before the train arrived at the station. Lesson learned “don’t kiss and tell”.

Mine would be the same no matter who knocked on my door, "Crap, I gotta put something on to open the darned door."

I would think they're at the wrong house, or that they are looking for someone and are asking neighbors for help.
