I see stuff on TV that they wouldn't dare put in the movies under any rating in the old days. High values are placed on being obnoxious, insulting, and crude. I don't even go to the movies anymore because sitting through the coming attractions makes me puke. And I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, believe me.

You're so right. I remember when we'd be shocked if a soap opera said d.a.m.n. and I remember when the show The Simpsons first came out....we watched it that first night and couldn't believe that they said ass or anything else!!! Now you're shocked if you watch something and they don't curse. I'm no prude either, but I don't want my kids thinking it's okay to walk around the house talking that way. That's why I love my nick @ nite on nickelodeon!!!!!

Yup, those were good times. My dad watched the yankees games and football mostly, but he'd do the same thing. If we were in a different room we'd hear something like "ohhh, you son-of-a -b*tch!!!" and maybe my mom and I would look at each other for a minute like "uh-oh" and then you'd remember, oh the games on!!! The superbowl parties were the best, it was 'the men only' but I always managed to sneak my way in and a friend or two and we'd be sitting in the middle of a bunch of screaming and cursing men who threw things around (without spilling their beers)... Somehow though, they'd start yelling at us too like we messed up the game because we were girls...but we stood our ground! I also miss going to yankees games and doing the wave or yelling "charge"...those were in the Don Mattingly days

My dad too. Hockey, football, baseball. And everyone he didn't like was an ***hole. One night I put a tape recorder, (remember THOSE??) behind the couch he used to sit on while he watched a Giants game and I played it for the family the next morning at breakfast so he could hear what he sounded like He was not happy!!! But he did eventually find it humorous!! We all did...........the good ole days

Wow, taperecorders! Those were "the thing" back then...I remember being around 10 years old and my friends and I would always taperecord ourselves, we'd sing songs by the go-go's or wham, we'd make believe we were "old" ladies and talk in funny old voices, we'd have regular conversations and try to forget the recorder was on so we could catch each other saying stupid things (or admitting who we had a crush on). Then we'd play it back and listen to these horrible squeaky little voices and giggle somemore!!! Sometimes we'd hide it on our parents too, but we'd always get caught and end up in trouble LOL

I went to the movies with my mother to see Shrek back in 2002, and then the last time (which I regretted because the movie sucked) was "War of the Worlds" because friends of mine invited me and I didn't want to disappoint them, although I wasn't the least bit interested. The only movie I've seen in a movie theater that I enjoyed and found actually to be good was "The Sixth Sense" back in either 1999 or 2000, I don't remember which. In general, I avoid the movies, I don't buy DVDs, I don't watch the Oscars, Emmys, and I see celebrities now on the news and I have no idea who they are, that goes for the music industry too. I'm not even that old! I don't watch nasty television...although... I must say that "Little Britain" on BBC America makes me howl with laughter...hilarious show. I love the real estate shows like House Hunters, Flip this House, What you get for the money, etc. I look at the year the episode was filmed and wonder what those who proudly took out ARM interest only loans are thinking now... :-o One reason I don't watch award shows anymore is because they've become crass. I watched the British "oscars" last year and was amazed by how professional and elegantly it was done, no bad language or sex/political jokes, just a professional show with eloquent speakers. I miss that in American television. It takes far more talent to speak eloquently than it does to say @$@#&% every two words.

Question I agree with Pixie although I was a late 70's kid

We didn't know what war meant, we didn't know the definition of terrorism or that terrorists even existed. Our form of terrorism was a bully in school. The only drills we'd practice at school were fire drills, not bomb or war drills. We were too young to debate the presidential election, or even care, it was just cool that the one we grew up with used to be an actor. We weren't afraid of being outside alone because some sicko would steal you. Everyone in your neighborhood looked out for each other, they didn't turn their backs or put their blinders on. Everybody seemed to like the same kind of music, watch all the same shows, there weren't too many stereotypes as a kid. We only had Atari and Collecovision...that was it. Anything else you did, you had to make up your own games (we actually used our own brains and imaginations for this)...manhunt, freeze tag, red rover, red light green light, etc. We used to make believe we were the people from movies & tv shows, Grease, Star Wars, Starsky & Hutch, Dukes of Hazzard, Goonies, Stand By Me and we'd re-enact the movie/show with maybe our own twist on the end. All the girls wanted to be the Go-Go's, Cyndi Lauper or Madonna, boys wanted to be Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, cops, robbers, or some famous wrestler. We crawled through neighbors yards and tried to see where we'd end up (down the block LOL). We caught lightning bugs (aka = fireflies). As long as someone's older sister or brother were outside, it didn't matter if we were running up and down the block in the summer. We made our decisions by using the eeny-meeny-miney-mo method or flipping a coin...that was that. Your friends parents could discipline you or lecture you without your own parents going into some rage about it. Your mom opened the door and either yelled your name for dinner or whistled...which made everyone come running because you didn't know who's mom was whistling. If you fell down, you "walked it off" not filed a lawsuit. We had pajama parties, roller skating parties and mcdonald's parties, not manicure, pedicure and hairspray parties at the salon. Boys beat up girls when they liked them, girls made fun of boys when they liked them...holding hands was dating and kissing was GROSS!!!! When your friends heard you were grounded, they all but sent sympathy cards...punishment was serious, not just having your tv shut off so that you could still play your gameboy or psp or nintendo ds, talk on the phone and get your nails done while hanging out with your 10 - not one but 10 - best friends. We rode bikes and did "wheelies", we had stupid metal rollerskates that your sneakers fit into. Girls and boys all looked alike with those horrible mullets and we all wore our socks straight up to our knees (with red stripes going around them). Fast food was a treat if you were good, not a way of life, your parents never owned a car that came out of that same decade, and they owned it until the doors fell off and the engine died, no trade-ins...
I could go on but I've said too much already. Point being, we were pure, innocent, fun loving, carefree children...I tell my children all the time, I wish they could experience even half of the wonderful childhood I had. Our goal is to provide as much of that as possible for them, whenever and however we can...That is what I miss.

Ps. one more thing, if you talked back you got a "beating"...end of story.
BUT, I also miss...
The days when you could make a friend easily, not worry if they were there to steal something of yours, ie, your credit, your job, your life.
I miss being able to find an elder in your community to make friends with and learn from.
I miss children helping their parents as they aged, not finding a nursing home for them.
I miss beautiful sunsets and the time to enjoy them.
I miss not being able to contact someone, simply because they weren't home. No cell phone, no computer.
I miss knowing the name of every person in my neighborhood.
I miss smiles and helping hands from strangers

Lime Rickeys, The Honeymooners, Choclate Egg Creams, The Dean Martin Show, The Red Skelton Show, The Jackie Gleason Show and now ladies and gentlemen live right here on our stage.....Ed Sullivan, beating Sal Maniscalco at skully, the real Twilight Zone, Zito's fresh baked italian bread, pouring soap suds into the water tower on top of that building on Cornelia Street in lower Manhattan the day of the blackout in 1965, stealing cookies from Zampieries Bakery trucks, Texs' luncheonette... I can go on and on

I miss.... seeing my Grandmother and Grandaddy kneel and pray every night before going to bed.
........ riding my bike around and around the yard after dark under the security light and pretending I was " cruising in a car" ( until Daddy would tell me it was time to come in).
........ my brother and I racing each other to be the first one up and then take off on our bikes riding the blacktop and returning home a couple hours later and getting fussed at by Daddy because he didn't know " where the heck we were".
....... playing in the woods and picking berries for Momma to make berry cobbler for supper and not even worrying about snakes.
.......snocone trucks
.......Bob Seger
.......My brother and my Daddy
....... going to bed with the window raised and the wind blowing thru after a good rain and sleeping soooo good.
....... going to bed and knowing I was safe cause Daddy would protect me.
....... Hearing my Daddy's voice and my brothers laugh
....... family get to gethers
....... waiting for my first boyfriend to finally come along
....... the excitement of getting ready for a date
....... school lunches made with "real food" and cooked on site
