Born 1948, in Baltimore, hon
I miss: Tru-Ade Orange Drink; Frosty Root Beer; Bonomo's Turkish Taffy; National Bohemian Premium Beer; fishing on the Severn River at my uncle's shore - conveniently wedged in between the piers of Sappington's Boat Yard; Mom's lemonade and chicken & dumplings; the down-home folks that were Mom's relatives down in Gilmer County, WV; yeast rolls made by the cafeteria ladies at Arbutus Junior High School; old time rock and roll; tail fins; suicide knobs on the steering wheel; steam trains and the men who made them go; the lack of an endless war on drugs; decent language; black men who had pride in themselves and their family despite segregation and discrimination; the lack of HMO's; the Baltimore Colts; Brooks Robinson; streetcars; cheap gas pumped out of our country; passenger trains that ran on time and had good food, fine linens, real silverware, live flowers, legroom, graciousness, scenery; colorful freight trains with a wide variety of cars from all over a huge nation; stock brokers you could trust; politicians who generally put people first - not vested interests or pressure groups; Supreme Court Justices who ruled based on wisdom - not partisan political stances; preachers kept their noses out of politics and stayed focused on their local flock; stockings and garters (oooh la la!); short skirts; intelligent conversation....and more....

What a great thread
I miss the neighborhood, locally owned; pharmacy, drugstore and hardware store all in the same little cluster. I miss walking home from school, mom let you 'cause she knew how long it took and she told you to come straight home... not because of fear of you being kidnapped, but because she had someting fun planned or fresh baked cookies.
I miss knowing my neighbors and their floor plans, back then they were all different
Progress can be good, I certainly don't miss the President being on all three channels..... might as well do homework
I miss the charm my old neighorhood had, went by there a year ago when I was in CA and it's gotten run down in spots. My childhood home is now the worst in the neighborhood, all the blood, sweat and tears my folks put into it...

We had the best hardware store...channel lumber!!! I used to walk there with my dad because it was right around the corner from my house(and next to carvel ice cream )...then it became rickels, now it's a marty shoes...go figure. The prerequisite to working in home depot is to be able to chew gum and walk at the same time (unless you're a high school part timer or you are a contractor who knows his stuff and does it on the side or in the winter for benefits...then you're okay)
Yeah, wonder woman rocked and so did the bionic woman (didn't she hook up with what's his name, oh, steve austin, the billion dollar man LOL????)

Great topic
Rainbow, this thread definitely makes me feel young again. LOL You're just a year younger then my husband.
I was born in SD in 1955. I miss the drug store with the counter where they'd serve root beer in a frosty root beer mug for 5 cents. And their cherry cokes were great. I miss drinking pop out of a glass bottle. We lived on the farm and I miss going to town on Sat. afternoons and walking up and down the streets with friends while our Mom's shopped and our Dad's sold cream and eggs at the creamery. I miss the smell of homemade bread and the warmth of of the cook stove during the winter. I miss my friends from the little one room country school that I went to. Weren't the drive in movies the best? There was a total sense of harmony, peace, and safety. We went to church as a family and our parents visited with their brothers and sisters and parents while we were in Sunday School. I miss the five and dime stores and being able to buy 6 candy bars for a quarter on Saturdays. Our Mothers didn't work outside the home. They helped our Dads with the chores and in the fields and were always close by. None of us ever stayed with a babysitter. We thought Russia was the big scary guy and they thought the same of us. I miss picnics in the park with family and relatives. Oh, now I'm getting weepy.

We didn't know what war meant, we didn't know the definition of terrorism or that terrorists even existed. Our form of terrorism was a bully in school. The only drills we'd practice at school were fire drills, not bomb or war drills. We were too young to debate the presidential election, or even care, it was just cool that the one we grew up with used to be an actor. We weren't afraid of being outside alone because some sicko would steal you. Everyone in your neighborhood looked out for each other, they didn't turn their backs or put their blinders on. Everybody seemed to like the same kind of music, watch all the same shows, there weren't too many stereotypes as a kid. We only had Atari and Collecovision...that was it. Anything else you did, you had to make up your own games (we actually used our own brains and imaginations for this)...manhunt, freeze tag, red rover, red light green light, etc. We used to make believe we were the people from movies & tv shows, Grease, Star Wars, Starsky & Hutch, Dukes of Hazzard, Goonies, Stand By Me and we'd re-enact the movie/show with maybe our own twist on the end. All the girls wanted to be the Go-Go's, Cyndi Lauper or Madonna, boys wanted to be Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, cops, robbers, or some famous wrestler. We crawled through neighbors yards and tried to see where we'd end up (down the block LOL). We caught lightning bugs (aka = fireflies). As long as someone's older sister or brother were outside, it didn't matter if we were running up and down the block in the summer. We made our decisions by using the eeny-meeny-miney-mo method or flipping a coin...that was that. Your friends parents could discipline you or lecture you without your own parents going into some rage about it. Your mom opened the door and either yelled your name for dinner or whistled...which made everyone come running because you didn't know who's mom was whistling. If you fell down, you "walked it off" not filed a lawsuit. We had pajama parties, roller skating parties and mcdonald's parties, not manicure, pedicure and hairspray parties at the salon. Boys beat up girls when they liked them, girls made fun of boys when they liked them...holding hands was dating and kissing was GROSS!!!! When your friends heard you were grounded, they all but sent sympathy cards...punishment was serious, not just having your tv shut off so that you could still play your gameboy or psp or nintendo ds, talk on the phone and get your nails done while hanging out with your 10 - not one but 10 - best friends. We rode bikes and did "wheelies", we had stupid metal rollerskates that your sneakers fit into. Girls and boys all looked alike with those horrible mullets and we all wore our socks straight up to our knees (with red stripes going around them). Fast food was a treat if you were good, not a way of life, your parents never owned a car that came out of that same decade, and they owned it until the doors fell off and the engine died, no trade-ins...
I could go on but I've said too much already. Point being, we were pure, innocent, fun loving, carefree children...I tell my children all the time, I wish they could experience even half of the wonderful childhood I had. Our goal is to provide as much of that as possible for them, whenever and however we can...That is what I miss.
Ps. one more thing, if you talked back you got a "beating"...end of story.

Yep grew up in the 80,s also all teenage years, what I miss, school swo much easier then than for my kids, no school shootings, didnt have a gang problem, just listened to great music about having fun, now music is about war, government, killing, music is suppose to be an escape, not a reality check! Ahhhh yes the Goonies, made in my home state, loved it!!! I miss the eighties all the time, to me it was the best decade!!! Riding bikes till after dark, all nite skating (not inline!), fun fun!!
