Today's Question(s): *
What was the first car you ever owned?
My parents bought me a 1950 Plymouth when I was in high school for $75.00. Dad had it painted, new seat covers and a radio that cost more than the car. For me it was love at first sight. I learned to change the oil myself. That baby drank oil. The gas gauge didn't work so I had to keep a log of mileage and get gas after so many miles. The tires were huge and we had to drive to Ft. Worth to find replacement tires in junk yards.
It was a big ol' tank with metal sunshade above the windshield and wonderful running boards.
Then began the lessons on how to drive a manual transmission. AHA! We bucked all over Abilene in that car but I mastered it and I'm so glad I did. My father told me that I should know how to operate a manual because there might be an emergency one day and the only car available might have a stick shift.
When I went off to college my folks sold the car to a teacher in town and as late as 1990 they could still spot it being driven around town.
The first car I bought on my own (okay, Dad cosigned) was a 1969 red VW beetle. I felt like I had been set free. I think we all remember the wonderful feeling of buying your first car. I drove that car to Chicago and hit a blizzard in St. Louis. Trucks and cars were off the road but that little bug kept chugging away. It was a great car.
Bonus Question:
Did it turn out to be a winner or a lemon??
