I've helped a few people whose car broke down. Mostly to help change a tire for a woman and once to replace a broken fanbelt.

In Alaska I will stop when out on the highway. However usually the most I will do is either make a phone call for them or offer them a ride to the nearest something. Other than jumping a dead battery I will not start working on someones car. I use to pick up hitchhikers but the last two put an end to that. One was a scam artist trying the "I just got paid but the check is in my girlfriends car...If you lend me 50 bucks I will send you a check for 100 bucks" He no longer wanted a ride once he found out I was not going to lend him any money. The last person I picked up turned out to be someone that had just been released from prison that day. He actually turned out to be a decent enough person.

I always stop to check on senior citizens. If I see them on a cell phone, I don't stop.
