We've moved out of state 3 times, but I've always had a job waiting for me. It's enough of a mind game moving with a job. I couldn't imagine trying to land somewhere and then find something to provide for the family.

Unless you know someone who can assist you, I think it would be foolish to move to an unfamiliar state without having some sort of job or income source lined up. Not to mention the expenses involved in relocating out of state but also you have no idea about the job markets in that state. I would not suggest it unless you have significant savings that can get you through several years in case you have difficulties finding work.

I did this in 1981. I was 27 years old and sought my fortune in another state. Moved; found a job in a few weeks; didn't make enough money; moved back to my home state less than a year later. It was certainly a learning experience! If I hadn't tried it, though, I would've always wondered about it. My only regret is that I moved all my stuff with me instead of storing it at home and waiting until I was established in the new place before sending for everything. As it turned out, I ended up paying to move my stuff twice in one year.

My brother and his family lived (still do, actually) in a suburb of the city I moved to (Kansas City, MO), so at least I did have someone close by whom I knew. I quickly made good friends at my new job as well, but simply was not making enough money to get by on my own.

When I was younger and lived in California, the Los Angeles area, I got so fed up with the rat race there, so I packed up everything into a U-haul and moved cold turkey to Phoenix Arizona and never regretted it. Had no job waiting, no place planned to stay.
But as soon as I arrived in Phoenix, I stopped at a gas station and called my mother to tell her I arrived and she said someone called from a large company and wanted to know if I would like to be a sales representative based in Phoenix for them. I called them from a pay phone, interviewed over the phone, got hired, then drove around and found an apartment for $100.00 a month. Started work a week later. That was 45 years ago.

We moved from the UK to Texas. Does that count?

We knew nobody, came with our daughter, a dog and a cat, but had a job there.

I'd worked in CA, but stayed in long term hotel accommodation and my wife had been in an apartment in NY years before, but actually living as a family and having to understand how things worked- or didn't- was a bit trying at first.

Silly things that became a headache, like which mail box is yours. In the UK they deliver to your door. That is just one small example, but they build up.

Not being able to access our own money from our bank account to start with was a major pain in the butt, so we tried using checks issued to us from NY. Why do they call it the United States of America when stores do not take out of State checks?

We got to work things out and enjoyed our time but I far prefer our retail banking system!

I did it this past June. Moved from MI to FL. Both places had bad economy but I hated the cold MI winters so I took a chance. I was on unemployment though so I did have 'income'. Rented a duplex, found a job through a temp service and I don't regret the move for one minute.

I did this a couple of times when I was in my twenties. Loved the experience and never had a problem getting a job. I would probably consider it again if my parents weren't getting older and may need me around. I think it is fun to move elsewhere.

I went to Saudi Arabia when I was in my 50's and then moved to WY when I was 60. Worked out fine for me but I wouldn't suggest it for someone as young as yourself, unless you are either moving to attend college or you have a decent job lined up and enough money put aside to support yourself while you are alone the first few months. If you are seriously thinking about the latter, I suggest you research the area first and visit it, if possible, to get a feel for the place.

I did. Back in the 1990's, I vacationed in Sedona, Arizona two years in a row. On my second visit, I said, "If I get a job, I'm staying." The rest is history.
