Tipping tells quite a bit about a person. Some people can be really cheap and that sheds light on their personality. I watch how people treat waiters and waitresses. Usually 20 percent if the service is good.

We do 20% and 3-5 dollars for buffet. I dont do tip jars, I think they are wrong. I tip 2 dollars a day for the houskeeper at a hotel. A dollar for the guy that pumps my gas.

Soooo true! I went on a cruise with a friend once, and at the end it came time to leave tips for the housekeeping staff, wait staff, etc. The friend was SO cheap about it. I ended up leaving more myself because I felt so embarrassed about what he was leaving. I'll never look at him the same way after that!!

Well I am glad this is getting response!

I agree with not giving to the tip jars, sometimes I just feel obligated to put something in them.

As far as buffets...I always tip there, not 20% but maybe 10-15%. They bring your drinks, clean the table and clear away dishes if you have seconds. These services value a tip.

At hotels we leave $5 per day. I think that is a fair tip considering my room is usually left pretty much the way I entered it.

Salon services is a biggy. The last 4 salons I went to were owned by the person who did my hair and I tipped each one and nobody ever gave it back to me. I feel that they should be compensated also. My haircut/color was $53 I gave a $10 tip. I want to make sure that next time I will be treated the same! Its worth the money.

Mostly I feel for waitresses/waiters. Its a really hard job and I feel 20% should be minimal!

Yes, but think about what I mentioned in my above post: those servers at buffets are constantly cleaning off your table and refilling your drinks at the very least! I still say, tip them one dollar per person--more if they go an extra length in taking care of you/your party/your table.

Thats a shame that waitresses have to pay for what happens in the kitchen, but I guess that is the same in any industry.

I go to Cheryls Cutz in Hamlin. Cheryl cuts my hair but I was watching the other hairdresser there and liked how she was cutting someones hair. She spent time with it, which can be the difference between a good cut and a great cut. Cheryl is good though. On 191 right across the street from the Library

I have to say that I still don't agree with tipping the owner of the hair salon. 1) They reap all of the profits. 2) They are paid more than the employee stylists. 3)If I have to tip them to cut my hair properly, then I am going to the wrong person.

As I said earlier, I have always tipped my stylist because she was an employee of a salon. However, I just started at a new salon up in this area and paid $45 for a shampoo & cut to the owner who cut my hair (it took an hour total). I am also going by the general tipping standards written in the etiquette book.
