I see threads every day asking, "What's the best company for... fence repair, car repair, haircuts, etc...?

I've used Angie's List for several years now - for plumbers, gutter replacement, handymen, lawn care, locksmiths, window repair, pressure washing/deck staining, carpet sellers, carpet cleaners, movers, and others. I have yet to be disappointed. I only use companies with an "A" grade, and preferably with 20 or more ratings.

It cost me less than $50 per year, and I consider that to be cheap insurance to pretty much ensure quality work. When I contact a company, I always let them know I found them on the list, so they know I'm expecting quality work. They also know I'll probably leave a review - good or bad - after the work is done.

I hate to sound like a commercial, but I've found a lot of useful info and helpful people on the Charlotte forum, and thought I'd pass along info on a service that's been invaluable to me.

I used it when I first moved and it was great for contractors...I have since cancelled because I completed all the things I wanted to do. It is an excellent tool to find and review contractors. All the people I used were excellent too.

Randomly enough, I just found out about this yesterday. I will probably look into it before my next remodel. Thx for passing it on.

Do they also provide price ranges or is it just ratings?

My husband and I use Angie's list all the time, right now we are trying to find a lawn care company to redo our backyard (trying to grow grass)..I have several companies to contact from angie's list, but if anyone knows a company for laying sod please let me know..we aren't sure if we want to try to grow grass and just lay sod. We have red clay dirt and I am trying to figure out the best way to go. Angie's list is great but so is word of mouth!

Hello, was not aware of Angie's list but thinks for posting, this will come in handy when I move into my new house. Thanks for sharing!

Each reviewer lists the services performed and the cost, so you can get a fairly good idea of what some services can cost before you contact the company. Some things like installing an irrigation system for your yard is highly dependent on your yard size, shape, and number of zones, so i wouldn't draw too many conclusions from the listed prices.

You can grade on various things like price, professionalism, quality, punctuality, overall experience, etc..

The company representative can respond to members comments too, so you can see how they handle any complaints that come up. You can also see all reviews by other members, so you can get an idea if they only leave negative reviews (you just can't please some folks) or visa versa .

You are paying $50 for a service you can get for free Home Improvement | Residential Contractors | Home Contractors at ServiceMagic. Why pay Angie when Service Magic is free? I used them once and had good results.

Thanks groove1 for posting this link and ncsenator for starting this thread. I agree, why pay when this service is free.
