Crocodile Hunter: Steve Irwin is Dead
I just read on MSNBC.com that Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to his chest while filming underwater off the Australian coast.

It is hard to believe that a stingray would be his demise after seeing him handle big crocks and numerous poisonous snakes. The last show I saw was with his wife and two kids.
He did a great educational service for the world and will be sorely missed.

He sure was passionate about his work. I feel sad for his family and friends. It's hard to believe this larger than life character is gone.

Odd - Those Rays are about as scary as Labrador Retriever puppies, and about as friendly. I've rolled around in the shallows with them and fed them. They are lovely creatures.

That's what's so ironic. I read that Steve Irwin was filming Rays trying to change the impression that people have of them being aggressive creatures. I know nothing about Stingrays but supposedly they are only aggressive when they feel threatened.

I was shocked to hear that news too. I heard it around midnight a few hours after it apparently happened in Australia. I admired him. He was a unique character who really got people to think about wildlife while also being very entertaining. The thought of being impaled on a stringray barb through the heart...unimaginable. I hope he died quickly without pain. I stepped on what I believe was a stingray once off Cuba when I was snorkeling and I was wearing flippers with exposed ankles. I remember how afraid I was that I'd get stung and I FLEW through the water to get away. It swam off too, but I've never gone into the sea since, and that was 1982. Steve Irwin will be missed. What a tragedy.

According to the news, Steve Irwin was the third person killed by stingrays. Best thing to do is stay away from them and let them live in peace.
