In high school I had a friend named Betty Burpo. There was a girl at school whose last name was Christmas. There were 3 girls in the family, Mary Christmas, Gay Christmas, and Joy Christmas. As an adult we had neighbors whose last name was Dick. I guess they were trying to screw-up their son when they named him Harry.

The high school I went to had a teacher named Mr. Mishmash for a while.

I knew a wonderful woman named Pam who married a man named Ennis (EEnus). She told us she was sitting in an Obstetricians office once and noticed the receptionist was calling names to see the doctor by first initial, last name.

Yup, she called for P. Ennis

I went to school with Frank Koch (pronounced cook, or so he claimed).

My husband's mother had a very good friend, a very genteel, refined Southern woman, whose last name was *****. He said she always 'headed people off at the pass,' choosing to introduce herself instead of having others do it for her.

When I wrote for a local newspaper, one of my jobs was to write the wedding stories and put together the Birth/Engagement/Wedding page for the Sunday edition. I stuttered and was flustered when a pretty young woman came into the office and handed me the form for her announcement. She was marrying a Fox, and her maiden name was Pussey -- pronounced with the French long a for the -ey. Worse yet was the announcements for the couples always had their last names, groom's first used as the headline, so it appeared in the Sunday edition as Fox-Pussey.

I seem to recall she was a young bride. Couldn't say I blamed her -- I'd have gotten 'hitched' first chance I had, too. Bad enough to think this girl's mother had married into the family with that name, huh?

My husband worked in an office with a fellow whose last name was Greasadick. He was amazed how many times people would hang up when Mr. Greasadick answered, such-and-such-a-place, Bob Greasadick speaking.

Ever watch drag racing on TV and see Jim Head race. I wonder if he has a son or brother named Richard.

A recent wedding announcement that appeared locally was a young man by the name of Small who was to wed the love of his life who's last name of Blow.

I also remember a couple named Barry and Flora B.u.s.h that I once had to send a letter to back in my banking days.

I swear, you can't make this stuff up!
