Default Things they don't debate/teach in school anymore

What topics can you remember being taught that nobody teaches anymore?

This came up because I've had an amusing conversation today about how my kids used to learn about James Garfield in school. It's kind of sad nobody teaches about that president anymore, but times have moved on.

We lived in Cleveland (Garfield's hometown) and back in the 1960's he was a local hero. My kids took regular field trips to visit the Garfield Monument and also had a few lessons about Garfield's presidency and (what the kids really got into) lessons learned from his assassination.

Two topics that stuck with my kids were how at that time it wasn't considered "American" for a president to have bodyguards, and also the importance of sterilized instruments. The kids even debated if Alexander Graham Bell should have been allowed to use his new invention to (possibly) save Garfield's life.

I doubt any schools still teach about Garfield (although I did ask on the Clevel forum just in case). It makes me wonder what other topics have slipped through the cracks over the years.

Penmanship!

My grandson is a senior and he can't read cursive handwriting (we used to call it script) at all. How sad that I write a grocery list and he has to ask me, 'what does that say'? He and some of his friends tell me that they won't need it in this age of technology. Sigh........

I think it was the Indiana state legislators that just this year voted to discontinue the teaching of “cursive” handwriting in public schools.

Same thing here. My youngest kid is still in school and they want every one to print. I have taught him how to write in cursive, but he only uses to sign his name and he can't read it all that well either.

Hi normie! It's great to see you on OT Forum again. In high school, every student in my county had to take an entire semester on why communism was anti-American. Can you imagine teaching a course like that nowadays?

Critical thinking. The ability to make a decision independently and with thought. Sadly lacking.
