There's one in Smithfield, RI that's been open since the 1950s. For a while in the 70s it was actually an X rated drive in and they built a sign to make that clear.........
When it went back to showing regular movies they never changed the sign- take a look, it's pretty obvious!
There is still a drive-in on Cape Cod. The Wellfleet Drive-In. Someday a developer will buy them out and erect yet another over-sized complex. Until then, enjoy the show.
The Starlite, between Amelia and Bethel east of Cincinnati, is still open last I heard. It was closed for the longest time, and the woman who owns the Midway Theater in Bethel bought it and fixed it up about 15 or so years ago. Her family had owned a drive-in in the 50s, and she wanted to renew the family business.
LMAO on the Rustic Drive-in sign!! I hope it never changes!
There is a 6 screen drive-in about two miles from my house. It opened in 1948 with one screen and then had the following conversions:
1977 converted to 3 screens
1978 converted to 4 screens
1983 converted to 6 screens
2004 facilities renovated
It holds 1820 cars. There are no longer speakers. Patrons use an FM radio to receive the audio. It's opened April - November. Adults are $6 and kids 9 and under are free.
I went last month to see "Chuck and Larry" and "Knocked Up." Had a great time and really enjoyed it.
Carthage, MO has one-it was a salvage yard until about 10 years ago. It does a great business. Lots of antique car clubs go there on their Route 66 trips.
There are 2 in the Denver Metro area but they are planning to close one of them in order to do some developments. The only one that will remain will be in Commerce City.
I think we have about 3 in Minnesota. I remember being a kid & going to the drive-in, we'd sit in line in our cars & just before we got up to the front we all had to either jump into the trunk or hide under blankets & junk on the floor in the back set so that my mom or dad didn't have to pay for us too!
