Today's Tip ~ Sat & Sun, March 17 & 18, 2012
Hi, kids! The subject of Today's Tip was suggested by
SATX56 on Friday. Scroll on down and check it out!
HELP FOR NIGHT LEG CRAMPS
I did some research on this subject and found some good info at the Mayo Clinic website. Click the link below to read about the causes of night leg cramps and to know when they might warrant a trip to your doctor.
Note that leg cramps are not the same thing as restless leg syndrome. Cramps generally come on suddenly and are very painful.
Here is Mayo's list of activities which may help prevent night leg cramps:
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
- Wear shoes that have proper support.
- Stretch leg muscles or ride a stationary bike for a few minutes before going to bed.
- Untuck the bed covers at the foot of your bed.
Here's the list of activities which may help relieve night leg cramps:
- Flex your foot up toward your head.
- Massage the cramped muscle with your hands or with ice.
- Walk, or jiggle the leg.
- Take a hot shower or warm bath.

Aww! Thanks Pam! Great tips as always. I've gotten out of bed a few mornings because of really painful cramps in my calves. Walk around a few minutes and back to bed.
Yes, for sure on the don't tuck in the covers at the foot of the bed. Or a really heavy blanket can hold the toes bent over when on your back.. ouch this gets me big time.
This 60 year old went roller skating with my daughter and the 4 year old Gdaughter Friday night. That should be sufficient exercise for tonight's sleep. Thanks!

Roller skating sounds fun! Hope you wear knee pads when you do that, SATX!
I, too, have noticed that when the covers are tucked in too much at the foot of my bed, I sometimes get cramps in my feet or calves. I generally don't have a problem with it, but once in a while........hoo, boy! It HURTS!

It's just seems like the last year or two I've been getting severe foot and leg cramps. Think it was Nomad who said they give quinine for cramps. Only time i hit a knee was assisting the little one in her fall. I fell a couple times. I actually used to be pretty good..way, way, way back.

Hmmm... sexy leg, Dave!!
If you get cramps, try to drink O.J. or eat banana. Usually low potassium cause muscle cramps.

No, no, no!!!!! Don't use Quinine for leg cramps!
It might help you leg cramps, but it cause serious side effects:
- Potentially serious interactions with other drugs
- Abnormal heart rhythms
- Ringing in the ears
- Thrombocytopenia, a blood platelet disorder that can cause hemorrhage
or clotting problems
- Severe hypersensitivity reactions
Eat more food high in potassium!!

Whoa! I may refuse Quinine for malaria after this.. I have no access to quinine and no intention of trying at this point. Thanks Elnina.
