Have you ever ridden in a train?
Only short distances. In the 50s & 60s there was a train that came into town delivering grain for the farmers. My dad knew the conductor & once brought me for a short ride.
There is a tourist train running through Vermont hills, passing within a couple miles of my house. I rode this as a child as well;
Commuter trains in Boston & NYC
Then there's the little train that ran at Santa's Land, similar to the picture SATX56 posted above. My grand daughters and I took a ride last fall, one of the last days Santa's Land was open.
Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane? If going a long distance, definitely more than a bus. I have a friend who has traveled some by trains & says I'd like it. She tells about many interesting people she's met.
Extra Credit Question:
It’s tornado season here in the Midwest, and we’ve already had some nasty spring weather. When the tornado warnings are broadcast, do you head for a safe place like a basement or interior hallway, or do you tempt the fates and keep doing whatever you were doing? We don't hear of tornadoes in Vermont often. I would head for my basement if there was a warning.
Have you ever seen or experienced a tornado? Thankfully, no.
Bonus Question:
When you shop for a wedding gift, do you prefer to get the happy couple:
Something from their gift registry?
A unique one-of-a-kind item from a gallery or workshop?
Something that you made personally?
A gift certificate or gift card?
Something else entirely?
Depends on who the couple is, how well I know them. If it's someone I know well then a unique gift from a gallery, but I've given all of the above.
Just For Fun:
Do you pronounce the word “pecan” as “PEE-con” or as “pi-CAHN?” Pee-can
However you pronounce it, what is your favorite food with pecans? I love them. So, favorite..... hm. I have used them to make small shells, then filled them with raspberry jam and chocolate ganache. So good.....
Now that parent/teacher conferences are almost over I will be spending my day typing up meeting notes & completing drafted IEPs. Enjoy your Sunday!
I think Spring might finally be on the way. It only got into the low 30's, but I could really feel the warmth from the sun today.
Today’s Question(s):
Have you ever ridden in a train? Many times
If you’ve ridden in a train, where did you go? I have ridden from Chicago to Portland to Sacramento, to Reno. It took 3 and a 1/2 days. Was a blast. Have also ridden the trains on the East coast. Have ridden the trains between Belgium and Germany several times.
Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane? Trains by far are my favorite way to travel. On my trip from Chicago to Reno I got one of the roomettes that made up into a sleeper. On the longer trips in Europe I usually get a first class seat.
If you’ve never taken a train ride, what has prevented you from doing so?
Extra Credit Question:
It’s tornado season here in the Midwest, and we’ve already had some nasty spring weather. When the tornado warnings are broadcast, do you head for a safe place like a basement or interior hallway, or do you tempt the fates and keep doing whatever you were doing? I have some unknown weird, twisted need to be out in awful weather. I am sure I would be outside watching things blow by.
Have you ever seen or experienced a tornado? I have not.
Bonus Question:
When you shop for a wedding gift, do you prefer to get the happy couple:
Something from their gift registry? A unique one-of-a-kind item from a gallery or workshop? Something that you made personally? A gift certificate or gift card? Something else entirely? For years I always tried to buy gifts that were useful or needed. That resulted in me spending countless days wandering around in a daze trying to find the perfect gift. Often I would have the "deer in the headlights" look. Parents would point at me and tell their kids to stay away from the crazy man. My friends stayed away whenever I had to shop for a gift. My health suffered. Mental health doctors started naming various mental conditions after me. Then one day one of my crazy voices in my head told me to go into the store without giving any thought as to what I was looking for and just buy the first thing that caught my eye. The same crazy voice said that people could care less what you give them as a gift, and if they did, that was their problem. I no longer fear shopping for gifts. I no longer walk around in a daze. My health is good. Parents still point at me and tell their kids to stay away from the crazy man. However that is not all bad as I seldom have to put up with kids that way.
Just For Fun:
Do you pronounce the word “pecan” as “PEE-con” or as “pi-CAHN?” I pronounce it "pecan"

If you’ve ridden in a train, where did you go? a long time ago to California to visit family.
Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane? would rather travel by plane(faster).
I love storms, I stand outside or in the house and watch the fury of Mother Nature.
Have you ever seen or experienced a tornado? Several times, but not full blown ones. Only one time did one touch down in a town not far from us, it was bad, 5 people got killed, I knew 2 of them.

If you’ve ridden in a train, where did you go? Here in California, from Santa Ana to Del Mar and back. In New York City, from Grand Central Station to Queens and back. In the Philippines (visiting my grandparents when I was a child), between my mom's hometown and my dad's hometown, a span of about 20-25 miles.
Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane? I really enjoyed riding the Amtrak trains here. The ones in New York and the Philippines, not so much.

Today Is:
National Sleep Day Since it's going to be raining, I may just spend the day doing this.
Good morning all from a once again sunny England! Now then, train rides. I have ridden trains many times. When we visit other countries I try out their trains if I can. Once, we were in Spain having a holiday in Salou, and rode to Barcelona, in Greece to Athens. I have never had a train ride in America, but would like to. Well, I've ridden a subway train down to Coney Island, but that's not a real train! That would be one of those big Amtrack things. Maybe one day!! I have never experienced a tornado, as thankfully, we don't get them here. Have a lovely Sunday everyone.
Used to commute to work by above ground train MD to DC
DC Metro (subway) from MD to DC or Virginia (airport) or just place to place in DC.
Chicago (in and around city)
Boston (in and around city)
Took Amtrak from NY to DC
Took Amtrak from DC to Philadelphia
Long Island Railroad
NYC subway
Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, Bryson City, North Carolina (scenic train ride)
Secret City Scenic Excursion Train (Tennessee)
Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane?
Anything is better than flying but I prefer to drive except I don't like to drive in cities.
Extra Credit Question:

Depends. Went inside the walk-in closet off a bathroom, twice. No basement here.
Have you ever seen or experienced a tornado?
Once, when upstate NY camping (when I was in my 20s) a tornado came through a campground we were staying in but I didn't know it until the following morning. No radio/TV when camping. Drove through a part of the southwestern part of Virginia the day after a tornado had hit. It had crossed the Interstate.

Hmmmm, when I lived on Long Island in NY the gift was always money at the receptions. I think that is the custom there (NYC, Westchester County, Long Island, and NJ near NYC). I have been to a wedding in another state and was surprised that most of the gifts at the wedding reception were actually wrapped gifts. When I lived in NY we only gave wrapped gifts at the shower.
Just For Fun:
Do you pronounce the word “pecan” as “PEE-con” or as “pi-CAHN?”
I put the pee in pecan.
However you pronounce it, what is your favorite food with pecans?
I may have pecans once every 10 years so I'll go with pie or cookies. The only other thing I can think of is salad.
Good Sunday morning, all, and welcome to our daily question-and-answer session! It’s a cool, damp day in South-central Wisconsin, and there is a haze of green covering the branches of the birches and maples in our yard, as the leaves awake from winter slumber and shake out their skirts. The forsythia is a riot of sunshine-colored blooms along the back fence, and a fragrant regiment of purple and fuchsia hyacinths march along the edge of the front walk, while clumps of brilliant yellow daffodils dance in the breezes around the base of the birch trees. I love spring in the Midwest!
And what better way to spring into Sunday than with:
Today’s Question(s):
Have you ever ridden in a train?
If you’ve ridden in a train, where did you go?
Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane?
If you’ve never taken a train ride, what has prevented you from doing so?
The last time was in 2007 when I took the Autotrain from Lorton, VA to central Florida. It was good that I had my car with me when I arrived instead of renting one. The ride was just okay. It took 17 hours and thank goodness no one was sitting next to me. I did not get a sleeper due to the cost which was a mistake. I was only able to sleep about 45 minutes and I paid for that the day of my arrival.
A big plus on taking the train was not going through the hassle of airport security. Nice that I was able to bring a cooler on board.
The dinner served was awful. A big mistake I made was not taking enough food with me. From the reviews I read I was expecting dinner to be better than it was.

Did you like it better or worse than traveling by bus or plane? Loved the train and the scenery. I would prefer planes because I can get to my destination quicker.
If I was on a vacation say to Vermont , Maine I would love to take a train.
If you’ve never taken a train ride, what has prevented you from doing so?

Depends
I am always aware of the weather and in tune.
A long time back a tornado touched down yards in front of me.
It was hard to describe but was confirmed.
Not a large tornado and fortunatley it was really not more than a bad wind storm.
I hope to never witness an f3-f5 category tornado like in Southern Illinois and Southern Indiana.

Yes
Exprerinced conds many times over
