Not as much as I'd like to be ... It is difficult being alone and not being close to family. I'm a social person by nature and it's difficult coming home each evening to an empty home. I try to find as much joy and fun out of life as I can but lately, it's all been difficult.
When I was young, in the army, I used to spend a lot of time in London. I'd spent my life before that in Oldham, a northern, blue collar town. I saw a whole different life style in the capital, many people with lots of money, big fancy cars etc. When I left the army, and went back with my young bride to Oldham, a seed of envy had been planted. As the years passed, I bought our first home, my children were born, and I worked hard, six days a week, lots of overtime. Still in my mind were thoughts like "is this all there is, just work, and more work." In the end, things happened, my marriage ended, all we'd worked for was split or sold, all the hard work seemed to have been for nothing. I've learned not to envy others, and be happy with what I've got. I've got more than many others have, and less than some. That's the way the world is. So, yes, I would say I'm happy.
yes but it requires much of me, like lots of participation.
not all of it is pleasant.
the hardest part is facing the jeering mobs that always know better, and never do.
No, not yet. I think its easier for people to put the past behind them, lose the regrets hang up when things turn out pretty ok even if its not what they had hoped for in the beginning. If there is a major hole still missing in ones life I think its harder to let go of the should have and could haves.
Of course things can always be worse don't we know it. It amazes me that people in places like the Philippines look more happy than we do over here, despite hardships. My gal's parents have had no electric or running water forever, thats just how its been. That changing now as I'm helping them build a house. But my point is despite the hardships, and little money, you always see them smiling. I think it has something to do with the fact that many have to face the facts early regarding life and thus have lower expectations for the future. Some can't finish high school, some don't get that far as they have to be working to help out. It pains me there are so many homeless children and stray animals over there. Its those kind of hardships our grandparents may have known here to some degree. I think a lot about people in other places having a hard time.
You're right toddOO, we're lucky to live in parts of the world where we don't go hungry, and with clean, safe water to drink. I look at Africa, where things never seem to get better, no matter how much money is given to try to help people there. Yet, there are loads of guns, and leaders with private planes.
I agree with Cunucu, its a bag of mixed feelings. Life in general, yes, but I miss being in a band and working 'regular' job with weekends off. Ever since my job at Lowes Ive started 'not' liking retail more and more. But, in general, am content.
Yep, you just have to deal with it the best you can. The only part I don't care for is growing old and not being able to do what I used to be able to do.
No, when I think of what I dont have. Yes, when I remember what I do have. When I find myself in those moments of "Why Me?, or why not me" I stop and count my blessings. Its not the life I dreamed of but I try and find away to replace the bad with good, and be optimistic about the future.
