Yeah, I agree, I always found it odd that lighter skinned people were trying to get a tan in the summer and yet have some prejudice for those of darker natural skin tones. Still this isn't the only place where skin tone has been an issue. In the Philippines for example, people tend to be looked down on if they are darker. They have skin whitening stuff in Asia, and most of the people on TV are lighter skinned.
We can hope one day all the color lines won't matter. I did read that 1 out of 12 marriages is now interracial in this country. So that's considerable progress. I do think that color isn't a big deal to people anymore, on the whole.
