How many can drive a car with the shifter on the steering column. How many took their road test for their drivers licence with the shifter on the column ?
Before getting a license 10-12ish I drove my grandfathers 57' GMC pickup with column shift and dads 64' Chevy with column shift. You name it I've driven it. I was licensed for everything but 747's and other hi- flyer's.
I learned to drive my Dad's '64 Mercedes he brought back from Germany, it had 3 on the column. Took my test a few years later in his '67 VW Beetle with 4 on the floor!

I can drive manual transmission vehicles with the shifter on the floor, and I drove a friend's old truck one time for a few minutes with 3 on the tree, and I did okay. All the manual transmission vehicles I drove/drive were/are stick on the floor.
I learned how to drive in high school in a 1974 Chevy Malibu, it had an automatic.
52 1/2 years ago I did the drivers test with three on the column in high school and was tested at the DMV in the state to get a license. Strange I forgot what type of cars they were back then but I remember using the clutch and the shift on the column. We even had to stop, park, and start up again on a hill for the officer who tested the drivers, and the car could NOT roll backwards while starting up from the parked position.
I did. Manual transmission is more popular in Europe.
Of course, when you drive manual transmission, you cannot roll your car back on a hill... you could hit someone behind you. You don't pass the driving test if your car rolls even few inches backwards.
I can't drive a three on the tree but I can rip a four on the floor!
