My mom made me grow up with Emily Post so I am full bred southern manners.

I use Miss and Ma'am interchangeably. I use Miss if I am addressing their name Miss Jones, but I use Ma'am as a sign of respect Can I have receipt Ma'am.
Yes, Ma'am restrooms are to the left.

sometimes it can be used in vengence Bless Your heart Ma'am I can see the sun didnt rise on your side of the bed.

Ya know Sunny, I didn't realize at first about the bless your heart thang, and used it as sincere as I could,
And Sunny in the south, do you use Ms. when you are unsure of the age??

In my 30's first time I was referred to as 'mam'. Also 'carded' about the same time Go figure. Certain occupations that I have had seems to demand the respectful 'mam - sir' addressing. As a 911 dispatcher, everyone was either mam or sir. As a young person (gee, I remember those days ) almost all where mam or sir, thanks to parental teachings.

omg lol now I have to clean diet pepsi off my screen.

I never used Ma'am until I moved south.
The kids at school call me Ms. karla. they also use Ma'am a lot
I have also noticed that when I ask a child a question their mom will tell them "yes ma'am" when they just say yes.

I don't see this as much up north.

Well, I experienced a lot of it in Texas and Oklahoma, even in a few assorted places in Wi. Those cowboys are very well mannered and the folks out there in general, offer good ol' southern hospitality, laid back, easy going, no rush, everywhere I went. Big difference over other areas Ive been in or through, and thats the type of people I enjoy being around.

I hate being called ma'am. I think it's my wedding ring that does me in. I would prefer not to be called ma'am until I'm at least 40. I'm only 28 for Pete's sake.
