Default Today's Question Sunday, 06 May 2012

Good Sunday morning to all, and thanks for stopping by our daily conversation! It’s a stormy day here in south-central Wisconsin, and I’m glad to be in my cozy living room, listening to the rain pelting against the windows. It’s a good day to stay indoors and chat with friends.

And on that note, let’s dive right on in and start discussing

Today’s Question(s):

When was the last time you traveled by air?

Where did you travel and what did you do there?

Do you have any vacation plans this year that will involve flying?

If you won’t be flying for vacation this year, how do you plan to travel instead?

Extra Credit Question:

It is said that the pun is the lowest form of humor. It is also said that the shortest distance between two puns is a straight line. Are you a punster?

If so, what is your favorite pun?

If you are not a punster, are there any punny people among your family and friends?

Bonus Question:

Have you ever visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC?

Are any of the names etched on its surface those of people you knew or are related to?

Just for Fun:

It’s National Hoagie Day! When was the last time you had a hoagie?

What do you like on your hoagie?

Today in History:
1536 – King Henry VIII orders English-language Bibles be placed in every church
1682 – Louis XIV of France moves his court to the Palace of Versailles
1816 – The American Bible Society is founded in New York City
1844 – The Glaciarium, the world’s first mechanically frozen ice rink, opens in London, England
1889 – The Eiffel Tower is officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris
1937 – The German zeppelin Hindenburg catches fire and is destroyed within a minute while attempting to dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 people
1941 – At California’s March Field, Bob Hope performs his first USO show
1981 – A jury of architects and sculptors unanimously selects Maya Ying Lin’s design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, from 1,421 other entries
1994 – The Channel Tunnel, a 31-mile underground tunnel connecting Folkestone, Kent in the UK with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais in France, is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II of the UK and French President François Mitterand

Today’s Word:
Panopticon \pă nŏp tĭ cən\ noun
1. A prison so constructed that the jailor can see each of the prisoners at all times, without being seen.
2. A room for the exhibition of novelties.

Happy Sunday!

Today’s Question(s):

When was the last time you traveled by air?

Memorial Day weekend, 2011.

Where did you travel and what did you do there?

To and from New York City, to visit a friend.

Do you have any vacation plans this year that will involve flying?

I don't have anything planned, though I often pull up travel websites just to fantasize going somewhere new and exciting.

If you won’t be flying for vacation this year, how do you plan to travel instead?

If I go anywhere, it'll be close enough to drive.

Extra Credit Question:

It is said that the pun is the lowest form of humor. It is also said that the shortest distance between two puns is a straight line. Are you a punster?

Occasionally .....

If so, what is your favorite pun?

I don't have a favorite -- they just pop out every now and then.

Bonus Question:

Have you ever visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC?

I don't think it had been erected the one and only time I toured Washington. The times I've been there subsequently were just to visit friends, so there was no sightseeing.

Are any of the names etched on its surface those of people you knew or are related to?

Not as far as I know.

Just for Fun:

It’s National Hoagie Day! When was the last time you had a hoagie?

Ummmmmmm ..... never?

IF I were travelling by air, Paris is where I'd want to go.
1937 – The German zeppelin Hindenburg catches fire and is destroyed within a minute while attempting to dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 people
1941 – At California’s March Field, Bob Hope performs his first USO show

And I'd ride it during my trip to France (that I'm not actually taking).
