No smoking in my place. I would go over to someone's place who did smoke. It's their home and their right. However, that has never presented itself as an issue because I have actually never encountered someone who smokes in their own house.

Oh, I wish we could say that!! Unfortunately all the people we know who smoke, also smoke in their homes (which as you say is entirely their right: Their house, their rules -- just like Our house, our rules!). Even worse, some of these people are now-local relatives who keep insisting we MUST come to their house for Thanksgiving or Christmas and there are always a dozen people there, 6 or 8 of them smokers, so there is someone smoking at ANY given time, often more than one. DH and I decided after last year's holiday that we are just going to tell them straight out this year that we will not be attending because we can't handle the smoke (instead of making 'socially acceptable' excuses like being sick or going away for the holiday, as we've done in the past). There will be hurt feelings and anger on their part but our health is more important than where someone else thinks we should or shouldn't be on a holiday.

You're right though, it sucks sitting and having a nice holiday dinner while people are chain smoking. We had the same crappy ritual for a couple years, until we called it quits too. It's funny though, they did the same thing as your relatives. They insisted on having people over. At first, I thought it was a pride and generous thing. Then I caught on that it was because they would have been devastated to have to go to a non-smoking household. God forbid if they couldn't light up a cigarrette while shoveling ham into their traps They now do their own thing for the holidays. Great people, just too much smoke!

I have no tolerance of cigarette smoke.....I avoid it like the plague. I'm an ex-smoker, and cigarette smoke makes me gag anymore. I never allow smoking inside our home....we have 2 young children, one of whom has asthma. If a smoker is at our house, they know to smoke outside. Which is what any sane person would do around children....in my opinion, nobody should ever smoke around children.
Also, I also avoid people's homes who smoke inside their homes. To be honest, there's only maybe one acquaintance of ours that even fits this description. Even almost all of the smokers we know don't smoke inside their houses anymore, except for maybe the basement.

We are non-smoker's so we don't allow smoking in our home or cars. Fortunately none of our friends smoke. We also avoid restaurants that allow smoking. The smoke will bring on a migraine just like perfume and big weather changes do.

My Dad died of lung cancer, after smoking 3 packs a day for many, many years. He was 49... so smoking is a sore subject with me. I feel like I already got my life time allowance of smoke at a very young age :-( . I will not allow anyone to smoke inside my house and I would not go to someone's house, knowing ahead of time that there will be smoking there. I'd rather meet that person in a a restaurant where they can't smoke, LOL!

Do you go into public places that allow smoking?
This is an interesting topic, however it would also be nice to know how many people would go into a business that is open to the public that allows smoking?
Personally I don’t smoke any longer, sorry I ever did! I don’t allow smoking inside my home or cars, and I don’t spend time anyplace that allows smoking.
It’s unhealthy, it smells terrible, it is a waste of money and no one benefits from it.
So how many of you would enter a public business that allows smoking? Restaurants and bars

Well, we are very lucky in that we live in a state with strong no-smoking laws (Massachusetts) and will be moving to a state with equally strong no-smoking laws (NY). So if you live in such a state, you don't have to worry about whether any public place allows smoking -- because none are allowed to.
Both Massachusetts and New York ban smoking in both government and private workplaces, childcare facilities, restaurants, bars, and recreational and cultural facilities.
If you're interested in what the smoking laws are in each state, you can go to this site and click on any state on the map, then on the resulting "grade" link for 'Smokefree Air' on that state's "report card" for the details of the types of places that smoking is either banned or allowed.
Tobacco Control Home
Personally I think the same laws that NY and Mass have, should become federal law for all states.

Anchorage enacted a no-smoking ban in bars and other public places. And anyone who allows smoking in a child care facility ought to be shot.
