That'd be my guess too. If it really was just in and out for a coffee, though, it might have created more pollution to turn the engine off and on again instead of just letting it idle for a few minutes.

For any modern car with fuel injection rather than a carburetor, the point at which it is less polluting to leave the engine running is measured in seconds, not minutes.

I would have replied I had to keep the AC on to keep the dead body in the trunk from stinking.

Especially in Florida!
Who knows, the guy could have been an insurance adjuster.
In any event, leaving your unoccupied car running isn't a wise choice.

Heres another theory... maybe the guy just jump started his car and knows the battery is not charged enough yet to restart the engine. Who cares?!?!?

In many states leaving car running is against law. Check the regulations in your area.
There is a law in Texas against leaving your keys in the ignition of your vehicle and thus you could be penalized.
I see a lot of ambulances doing so, they leave the motor running and go... eat. I even asked why they do so, and they said that they want the car nice and cold when they come back.

Thats pretty much the main point; who cares!. Unless there really was a dead body in the trunk that needed to be kept cool.

I had a truck that I used to always leave running, unless I'd parked on a hill, if I didn't, it wouldn't start again without a push.

These days it's a good idea NEVER to leave your keys in the vehicle,,,,,,, there are others who would just as soon take it for a ride as to leave it parked. In some states you can't leave your kids or pets in the parked car anymore because of heat issues.
