Really?! SMH (lol)
I think it depends on where you live. People out here leave their cars running a lot, to run into the mini mart or the post office. A lot of them dont even lock their doors, so Im told, and have seen it myself, more often than not. We dont have a Starbucks for 30 miles from here but.
Or....GloryB has the right idea!

Mr. Rude Guy probably didn't realize that turning your car off and back on takes up about the equivalent of 10 minutes idling in gas. As long as Mr. Starbucks Drinker took less than ten minutes to get his coffee, he was probably saving gas.

A car thiefs best friend and the loudest complainer when it's taken. Probably leaves the laptop and iPhone on the front seat, too.

We do not know where the original poster is located.
Here in south Florida, Starbucks has real nice outdoor tables to sit at, along curbside.
I can definitely understand it being a real issue if someone were to pull right up and leave their engine running, leaving customers to be stuck breathing his car fumes.

No, it doesn't. Restarting the car consumes about as much gas as ten seconds of idling.

^^^ Consumer Reports states that if the vehicle will be idling for 30 seconds or more then it is economical to turn it off.
I can see that being a matter of what sort of vehicle it is, but I really wouldn't know.

In Quebec, it is illegal to leave an unattended car unlocked, even for a minute.

Oh. Well then the people I grew up with taught me wrong. I'm sure the guy who left his car on was taught the same thing and was just trying to do what he thought was right. No need for the other guy to be rude...he could have just let him know, the way you did here, instead of reprimanding him.
