A few years ago, Texas Monthly ran an article on "Bubbas". It really covered the whole spectrum from nicknames to given names, from professionals to the common, everyday guys (and a few gals, if I remember correctly), from black folks to white folks. It was quite entertaining and quite enlightening, too. So, what's your take on "Bubbas"? Do you only associate the name with rednecks, or are you comfortable with the name at all. Oh, and by the way, I found the discussion concerning Longview and rednecks quite entertaining, too.

I'll start it off, in fact. I've only known one or two Bubbas in my short lifetime. The one I knew really well died a month or so ago while working in Africa. This Bubba was a high-school football player of reknown in his day, back in the early 60s. Last time I saw him was several years ago at an Oktoberfest event in my hometown in Mississippi, and while he was a worldly type of person then, he really hadn't changed at all.

One other thing: Don't drag politics into this, please?

I think after 7 years of having to deal with a certain Bubba in D.C. that the moniker should be retired for eternity.

I have been know to use "Bubba" as a term of endearment.
Never really thought of it as a stereotype. Although, I am from the south.

I quite agree with you. I'm from Mississippi, BTW, now in TX. Gotta be from somewhere, eh?

Bubba shot the jukebox, last night. Said it played a sad song, made him cry!

Hmm, I do associate the name with 'country folk' but I don't see it as a negative nickname. I wouldn't ever call my kid a bubba because of the outwardly perception it has of it being a "hick nickname" but the Bubbas I've known have always been pretty cool ... which is just two: my SIL's bro and Bubba from Forrest Gump. Heehee
