Default Best 46" HDTV To Buy?

We are looking to buy a nice 46" HDTV as a Christmas present for us. We found a nice 46" Poloraid HDTV (1920x1080 resolution) at our local Wal Mart for $1,385. I looked at some reviews, on the Internet, and only two were bad. This week, we stopped by a Best Buy store and a salesman that we talked to told us that he would never buy a Poloraid TV. Of course, that is his opinion about TV's made by Poloraid. All we know is that when we looked at this 46" Poloraid at Wal Mart, the picture was so, so, so beautiful.
Can anyone of the Forum tell us anything about Poloroid or recommend a nice 46" HDTV to us.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We recently bought a 46" LCD Sony HDTV. We were impressed with its picture in the store, in side-by-side comparisons with many other TV's, and we're still impressed with it today. It's a 1080p, which inlcudes 1080i and all the lower HD formats.

It's also more expensive than the one you mentioned but you might want to consider it. The model is the, KDL-46XBR4.

Click here for info on the TV from the Sony site.

BTW, it also has a 1920x1080 native resolution, the same native resolution as the TV you're considering, and three HDMI inputs. However, it also has a higher frame rate than many other HDTV's (120 Hz v. 60 Hz), which provides a clearer picture during high motion situations.

The bottom line is that we've had this one for a couple months now. Our opinion of it remains the same. We wouldn't trade it for any other make at this time.

As for your Polaroid TV, I don't know anything about it so can't give you any direct advice on it. However, I would suggest that you compare it directly against the Sony that I mentioned and see if you come to the same conclusion. You might see a big difference or you might find little difference. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

ON EDIT: You didn't mention if the Polaroid was an LCD or a Plasma TV. Both can be high def TV's. If it happenes to be a plasma TV, take note of the screen material. You will see that it is shiny glass. If you have any background lights in the room, or windows that cannot be totally blacked out, the plasma will show reflections. It is very distracting. Such a problem will be minimized, if not eliminated, on an LCD HDT TV such as the Sony.

As an example,we have an entire wall of west facing windows to the side of the room with the TV and a few more directly facing the TV far across the room. If we were going to have reflection problems, we would have them first thing in the morning. The fact is that we get no reflecions at all on the LCD screen, even in the strong morning light that pours into the windows.

It's an issue that you might want to think about. Good luck!

On one, last thing. You might get a better response to this thread if you got the Mod to ship it over to the Technology Section. Perhaps you should ask for it to be moved.

Check online with the BestBuy,,,,, sometimes they have specials that are less then instore prices. If you find something online that you like go to the local store they will honor any online sales or discounts.

Personally I found the best HD several months ago at BestBuy – it was a Samsung 47” rear projection. There are several factors that everyone must consider when buying their tv. I would look into the different “types” of HD more then just who the manufacture is. At a store you can compare different models, types of HD and prices. I liked doing shopping at BestBuy and found the sales/tech people to be very knowledgeable.

Remember there are different types of screens and some will fail after X hours of use or become damaged. Rear screen projection HD has a lamp that will burn out in about 2 years and can be replaced making the TV like new again. Flat LCD screens are not repairable.

At the time I was looking Samsung HD had the best picture quality, price and was a rear screen projection set.
